• Architectural style : Brutalist architecture

• Tagore memorial hall is a Theatre hall with the capacity of 700 persons

• The site is located on the banks of the River Sabarmati

ARCHITECTURE
• Tagore hall is an example of brutalist architecture

• Series of rigid triangular folds along the foyer and auditorium are seen on the north
and south concrete walls of the building

• These structural as well as decorative folds form a 17m high and 33m wide outer
shell of the building.

• These folds are followed by flat surfaces with a series of windows which make a box-
shaped backstage and stage area.

• It is followed by a last triangular fold at the corner of the building which has an
exterior staircase on the south corner inspired by the Mill Owners' Association
Building.
LOAD TRANSFER MECHANISM

• Slab load goes in two way directions

 One direction to the east and west side of RCC wall

 One direction to the north and south side RCC folded plate

• RCC folded plate and RCC walls load transfer to the strap {continuous to all 4
sides od the structure} which ends to the footing of these strap resting on a sandy
strata

• Cantilever structure for the seating arrangement in which load of the seats transfers
to the circular concrete wall
• RCC folded plate provided on north and south facade which takes the load of RCC
slab covering whole structure

• Due to the presence of larger slab area sideways wall is folded to resist the bending
from the center portion and transfers whole load to the RCC folded plate

• Folds are 2.4m deep at the top and 1.15m at the base

• Vertical folds are 17m high and span of fold is 33.5m

• Plate thickness is 10cm increasing to 15cm near the supports

• Column requirement is removed inside the structure due to folded plate

CONCRETE SHEAR WALL

• The Outer shell of the building contains a series of rigid frames of Vertical folded plate
adjoining shear walls.

• This Shear walls are placed as the vertical block at the end of the both side of the
building.

• It is seen as a service facade from outside in which it not only serves the light to
washrooms and greenrooms, through rectangular openings but also serves as shear
wall, which resist lateral and seismic forces
• Walls are directly connected to strip footing foundation due to the voluminous
structure

• span of the building which is 33.5 metres (outer Span), 62 metres in Length and 17
metres in height

• If the dynamic force is absent and lateral loads are small then the load can be
transferred through columns, connected to beam.

• Series of folded plates from foyer to the stage of the theatre acts as a load transfer
system on both sides.
