STUDYOF CAR ALLOY WHEEL

ABSTRACT
• Companies are focusing on new concepts and developed technologies to
reduce design and development cycle time and increase the variety of
products to meet the rapid changing customer requirements in the highly
competitive automobile sector. Wheel manufacturers are designing and
developing a large number of varieties of wheels for passenger cars according
to customer requirement to retain the market share in global competitive
environment. Hence manufacturers are focusing on customization of wheels
according to customer specification. During customization of wheels the
similar repetitive design tasks can be captured and reused automatically.
• This project is to study on the basic geometric model of alloy wheel geometry
configuration and study the generated variants model of alloy wheel for given
specifications like wheel diameter, number of spokes, wheel offset, bolt hole
pattern, rim width etc. This reduces the design cycle time by automating
mundane work activities of product development process.
INTRODUCTION
 New and developed technologies to reduce design
and development cycle time and developing the
variety of products to meet the customer requirement

 Manufacturers are focusing on customization of

wheels according to customer specifications to reduce
design and development cycle time

 The designs of alloy wheels depend on wheel

configuration such as capacity, rim width, rim
diameter, wheel offset, and bolts pattern, type of
spoke and no. of spokes.
OBJECTIVE

To study on reduced design cycle time by automating mundane

work activities of product development process.

capturing the knowledge.

THREE MAIN VARIATIONS OF WHEELS

Steel wheels
The pressed wheels are light, strong, stiff and
resistant to accidental damage.

Wire spoke wheels

They were light yet strong as they not only had to
withstand the weight of the car but also forces of
acceleration, braking and cornering.

Alloy wheels
Main advantage of being lighter than the other types of
rims, promotes stiffness and distribute stresses over a
wider area.
MANUFACTURING METHODS OF
WHEEL/RIM

One piece rim

 This is a method of the casting or the forge at the same time
by one as for the rim and disc.

Two piece rim

 This is the methods which separately manufacture the rim and
disc similar to the manufacture of the steel wheel and these
components are welded afterwards.

Three-piece rim
 This is a method to manufacture each flange separately, and
combining later to the disc by welding.
WHEEL DIMENSIONS

 Sizes are determined by rim diameters, rim width and flange height.

 A typical wheel size might be 14 x 7J. Rim diameter and rim widths
are always expressed in inches, so this wheel is 14 inches in
diameter and has a rim width of 7 inches.

 The letter combination following the rim width indicates the flange
height in inches.

 A J rim has 0.68-inch high flange while a K rim has 0.77-inch high
flange
WHEEL DIMENSIONS
WHEEL OFFSET
Offset is the distance from the mounting
face of the wheel spider to the rim centerline

Offset is positive when the mounting face

(lug circle) is outboard of the centerline and
negative if the lug circle is inboard of the
centerline

All wheels are for either positive, negative

or zero offset.
APPLICATION

The main application of this method in the field of

product development is to automatically generates
product concept from input specification.
CONCLUSION

 The variants of wheel design based on input and requirement.

 The complete generation is drive through design rules and empirical

relations embedded in the application.

 Major advantage includes immediate updating of all parameters

complying with future.

 Repeatable errors are minimized (level of committing error during

repeated use completely eliminated).
