WHAT IS REFLECTIVE WRITING?
Reflective writing IS NOT ONLY TO;
➜ just conveying information, instruction or argument BUT documenting your
response to experiences, opinions, events or new information
➜ purely description, though there may be descriptive elements BUT
communicating your response to thoughts and feelings
➜ put straightforward decision or judgement, e.g. about whether something is
right or wrong, good or bad BUT a way of making meaning out of what you
study
➜ simply a problem-solving BUT a way to achieve clarity and
better understanding of what you are learning
➜ summarise the course notes BUT a way of exploring your learning
➜ write a standard university essay BUT an opportunity to gain self-knowledge
and to develop also reinforce writing skills

 We can express what we have to say IN ADDITION TO (AGREE)
or IN CONTRAST TO (DISAGREE) what the author of the article
says.
 The reflective paper can be done in three different modes of writing
or language (can be mixed)
 Descriptive ( describing what something is or how something is
done)
 Explanatory ( explaining why or how it is like that)
 Expressive ( I think, I feel, I believe)
 Reflective writing is often less formal—you can usually use personal
pronouns like 'I', 'my' or 'we' - but keep colloquial language to a
minimum, e.g. terms like kid, bloke, stuff.

WHAT IS THESIS STATEMENT?
 A statement, in one sentence, that SUMMARISES THE MAIN POINT/claim/view
of a written text (research paper, essay, article, letter)
 It TELLS READERS what your paper will be about.
 Makes A CLAIM that others may either agree or disagree with.
 Is a statement, NOT a question.
 Is written in your own words NOT a quote from a source.
 Generally appears AT THE END of your introductory paragraph.

STEP 1: START WITH A QUESTION (TOPIC)


What the article is all about? What would you like to find out or decide about your topic? COMING UP
EXAMPLE : Has the internet had a positive or negative impact on education?

STEP 2: WRITE YOUR INITIAL ANSWER (CONTROLLING IDEA) THESIS
After some initial research, you can formulate a tentative answer to this question. At this stage it can be
simple, and it should guide the process of researching and writing. The answer should pick a side and take

EXAMPLE : The internet has had more of a positive than a negative effect on education.

STEP 3: DEVELOP YOUR ANSWERS (PREDICTORS)


Now you need to consider why this is your answer and how you will convince your reader to agree with
you.
The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall argument.
EXAMPLE THESIS :The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education in
terms of the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a
flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.
