OBJECTIVE OF FARM PRACTICAL TRAINING

 Provide students with an opportunity to apply their

theoretical knowledge in real work situations.
 Impart practical, analytical and entrepreneurial skills to
students.
 Expose students to problems in the practical production of
livestock.
OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

 Prepare students for industrial work situations that they

are likely to meet after graduation.
 Make the transition from school to the world of work
easier and enhance students’ contacts for later job
placements.
 Prepare students for industrial work situations that they
are likely to meet after graduation.
CROP PRODUCTION PROGRAM

 MAIZE PRODUCTION

 GROUNDNUT PRODUCTION

 SORGHUM PRODUCTION
The farm operations were grouped into

 Pre planting operations

 Planting operations
 Post planting operations
PRE PLANTING OPERATIONS
 Land clearing: The first stage of this operation was done using a tractor,
after that we use cutlass to cut the weeds/stumps remaining on the plot.

 Ploughing: Ploughing was done with the aid of tractor mounted plough.

 Ridging: after ploughing, the next pre planting operations performed was
ridging. The tractor mounted ridger was used with the ridge separated by
70cm each (inter spacing)

 The length of the ridge was 100m and each student was given 2 rows.
PLANTING OPERATIONS (MAIZE, SORGHUM)
 Maize Planting date; 7th June, 2021
 Groundnut planting date; 29th June, 2021
 Sorghum planting date; 23rd August, 2021

 The planting was done using crude method (hoe), with 2-3
seed per hole and an intra spacing of 25cm and an inter
spacing of 70cm.
POST PLANTING OPERATIONS
 Herbicide application: Pre emergence herbicides was applied with the aid of a knacksap sprayer and the herbicides
used were, Tanzine (Atrazine 80WP), Pentashi (Paraquat dichloride SC) and Tanchlor (Butachlor 50% EC).

 Thinning: Selective removal of part of a plant.

 Supplying: Replanting of plants that fail to germinate

 Weeding: Two method of weed control was adopted, chemical(Herbicide) and cultural(Hoeing).
 Herbicide: DDforce insecticide (profenofos 40% cypermethrin 4% EC) was use to control Army Worm and the
spraying occurs at the fifth week of planting

 Fertilizer application: The fertilizer used were (NPK 20:10:10 )and (UREA) at 3rd and 6th weeks respectively using
side placement method.

 Harvesting: The harvest was a dry harvest i.e a situation where by the maize, groundnut and sorghum were
left on the field to lose all it moisture content.
ANIMAL PRODUCTION SECTION
Poultry Unit
Small and Large Ruminants Unit
Rabbitary Unit
Piggery unit
Fishery Unit
WORK DONE IN POULTRY UNIT
 Sanitation Practices: The brooding house was cleaned, disinfected using
iodine based disinfectant, fixing of damaged net, cleaning of the foot dip.

 Brooding: Brooding is done because the young chicks lack feathers to

regulate their temperature and their immune system is weak thereby making
them highly susceptible to diseases.

 The birds were brought on 12-02-2021.

 14 mortality and 89 birds were sold

DAILY ROUTINES IN POULTRY UNIT

 Feeding
 Washing of the drinkers with clean water.
 Provision of clean water
 Changing of the foot-dip water.
 Observation of birds for possible infections.
 Removal and disposal of mortality if found.
 Removal of mold or contaminated feed and addition of fresh
supply.
 Cleaning and sweeping of the passage and storage area.

 14th day Newcastle (Lasota) Oral

 21st day Gumboro booster Oral

 28th day Lasota booster Oral

SMALL & LARGE RUMINANTS UNITS

breeds, raised under semi-intensive system.
 The large ruminant unit consist of cattle of various breeds such as
White Fulani, Sokoto Gudali and Muturu.
 Daily activities include; Sweeping, provision of feed(Dry Forages),
provision of water and letting the animal out for grazing.
