Inhibitors Inhibitor
A. Transport inhibitors bind to
one of the electron transport
complexes and block the transfer
of electrons to oxygen, thus
interfering with the ability to
create a proton gradient

B. The ATP synthase
inhibitor oligomycin
binds directly to the enzyme
complex and plugs up the
H+ channel, which blocks
ATP formation.
C. Uncoupling agents provide an alternate pathway to transfer
protons back into the mitochondrial matrix, which dissipates the
proton gradient and bypasses ATP formation by the ATPase

Thermogenin: now known as uncoupling protein 1, or UCP1

What is Thermogenin?
Thermogenin (called uncoupling protein by its discoverers and now known as uncoupling
protein 1, or UCP1) is an uncoupling protein found in the mitochondria of brown adipose
tissue (BAT). It is a proton transporter and dissipates the proton gradient generated by
oxidative phosphorylation and diverts energy from ATP synthesis to thermogenesis
(uncouples the system).
