PREPARATION OF

BUFFERS
BUFFERS
• A mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and its
conjugate acid

• Works by reacting with ay added acid or base to control the pH

• Neutralizes any added acid (H+ ions) or base (OH- ions) to maintain the
moderate pH, making them a weaker acid or base.

• Maintains a constant pH level in a solution

• a solution whose pH resists change upon addition of small to moderate

amounts of a strong acid or base
Examples of acid-base buffers are solutions containing
• CH3COOH and CH3COONa
• H2CO3 and NaHCO3
• NaH2PO4 and Na2HPO4
Importance of buffers:
• Important for processes and/or reactions which requires specific and
stable pH ranges.
• Important in living systems as a means of maintaining a fairly constant
internal environment, also known as homeostasis.
• Resists sudden change in pH level that may be dangerous to any living
organism.
