CLUTCH SYSTEM
Clutch System
• The clutch system is an indispensable mechanism for the operation
of a vehicle, everybody knows that the clutch let us change the gear
but how it does it? The clutch system is a mechanical element that
transmit the power of the engine to the gear box and permits to
separate or join the rotation of the engine with the transmission
manually, releasing the movement to the motor tires (if there is an
engaged gear)
COMPONENTS OF THE CLUTCH SYSTEM

INERTIA FLYWHEEL: Also known as Engine flywheel, is a circular

piece, a flat disc carefully equilibrated that turns in solidarity with the
crankshaft, Every time the engine is one the flywheel will be turning. This
part can be monomass or bimass. The flywheel has some external teeth
engaged with the starter motor
• CLUTCH DISC: Also called friction disc, is a disc cover in its two
faces with an abrasive material, similar to the material of the brake
pads, the clutch disc is attached to the primary axle of the
transmission and turns in solidarity with the flywheel when the
driver unclutches (Without stepping on the pedal) and it separates
from the flywheel to permit the driver make the gear changes
(Stepping the pedal)
• PUSHING FORK: This is a metallic piece in fork
shape, it is in charge of pushing the hub diaphragm
spring through an thrust bearing in which interior host a
bearing. The pushing fork can be activated with a cable
system or a hydraulic system
• PRESSURE PLATE: This mass is a piece with a crown
shape, it is screwed to the flywheel. Its interior face is in
contact with the clutch disc, and the exterior face there is
mounted an diaphragm spring. These springs let the disc
fits and separates with the pressure plate, transmitting or
not the power to the transmission
How the clutch works?
• Here is what happens, This is the situation, we start the car stepping
the clutch pedal, the flywheel starts turning together with the clutch
disc and the pressure plate, the driver put in first gear a start releasing
the pedal a little by little when this is happening we are releasing the
pressure of the diaphragm spring of the plate approaching its Surface
to the clutch disc. When they finally begin to rub against each other
the movement of the engine is transmitted to the gear box
CLUTCH ACTUATION TYPES
• There are many ways of how the pressure on the plate is made to
make it join with the disc, These are the most used types:

• Mechanic friction clutch: Is conformed by two parts, The pressure

plate and clutch disc, this system push one them with the other
controlling the torque transmission (with springs or diaphragms) Its
functioning is carried out by hydraulics through a cable
• Electromagnetic clutch: This type of clutch works in
accordance with the electromagnet principle. This clutch
is conformed by an iron core and a coil creating a
magnetic field. When the iron is activated by electric
pulse, this uses the strength of the magnetic field for the
transmission of the torque
• Hydraulic clutch: Acts automatically between the engine and the
gearbox (could be Automatic or semi automatic) This type of
actuation uses a fluid to reach hydraulic force by using a
centrifuge pump which transmit to a turbine, this type of clutch is
known for the low wastage of material and the smooth
functioning
