INTRODUCTION
● Seepage of water under the
earthen dam foundation results
in the failure of the system.
● Practically this problem is
addressed by introducing cut-off
wall.
● To control the failure of Cut-off
wall, It should possess high
deformability and low
permeability.
INTRODUCTION

● One of the material which helps to achieve the

required properties of cut-off wall is called plastic
concrete.
● Plastic concrete known by its particular combination of
the properties such as low strength, low stiffness, low
permeability, high water-binder ratio, self consolidating
and self-hardening properties with high deformable
capacity.
OBJECTIVES

● To arrive at an optimal mix design for plastic concrete.

● To compare the stress-strain behavior of normal and
plastic concrete using experimental study for various
confinement pressure.
● To formulate a constitutive model for plastic concrete.
METHODOLOGY
● Characterisation of materials used in the plastic
concrete.
● A mix design is will be arrive for normal concrete and
plastic concrete.
● Experimental studies on normal and plastic concrete
cylinders using a deformation or strain control test.
● Experimental studies on normal and plastic concrete for
different confinement pressure.
● Collection of experimental stress-strain graph of plastic
concrete available in literature.
Material Characterization
● Plastic concrete is composed of five basic ingredients
namely cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate,
bentonite and water.
● To find material characteristic of plastic concrete some
laboratory tests are conducted as follows:-
1) Sieve analysis
2) Specific gravity
3) Water absorption
Sieve Analysis Test:-

Reference:- IS 2386(Part I)
IS 383 (2016)

● To determines the
distribution of aggregate
particles by size within a
given sample.
Importance:- Particle size distribution can affect a wide range
of properties such as the strength,the solubility, their surface area
properties.
Specific Gravity and Water absorption:-

Reference:- IS 2386(Part III)

● Specific gravity is the ratio of a material's density with
that of water.
● Water absorption gives an idea on the internal
structure of aggregate.
EXPERIMENTAL DATA

A1 = Saturated weight in water (sample+basket)

A2 = Weight of basket in water
A3 = Wire Basket Weight in air S.G. = W3/(W2-W1)
W1 = Weight of saturated aggregates in water (A1-A2) W.A. = 100*(W2-W3)/W3
W2 = Weight of saturated surface dry aggregates in air
W3 = Weight of oven dry aggregates in air
EXPERIMENTAL DATA

W1 = Weight of saturated surface dry

sample S.G. = W4/{W1-(W2-W3)}
W2 = Weight (pycnometer+sample+water) W.A.= 100*(W1-W4)/W4
W3 = Weight of (pycnometer+water)
W4 = Weight of oven dry aggregates in air
MIXING SEQUENCE

1) Slurry Preparation :- Bentonite is prehydrated for 6 hours. After

prehydration, the bentonite absorbs water and expands in
volume.
2) Mixing of Dry Compounds
3) Addition of Bentonite Slurry
4) Addition of Water
5) Workability :- The slump cone test and flow table test both are
performed to measure workability. Generally, for placing the
plastic concrete material tremie method is used.
