What is MIMO
 MIMO is an antenna technology for wireless communications.

-Multiple antenna are used in both transmitter and receiver.

 Massive MIMO is an extension of MIMO, which essentially

groups together antennas at the transmitter and receiver to provide
better throughput and better spectrum efficiency.

- Uses a very large number of service antennas.

Is a basic and key technology for 5G networks.

Achieves better coverage and larger capacity than the traditional

technologies.

Support 10s to 100s antennas.

Massive MIMO Potential
1. Massive MIMO can increase the capacity 10 times or more and
simultaneously improve the radiated energy efficiency on order of
100 times.

The capacity increase results from the aggressive spatial multiplexing in

massive MIMO
2 Massive MIMO can increase the data rate.

Because the more antennas, the more independent data streams can be
sent out and more terminal can be served simultaneously.

Each terminal can be given with the whole bandwidth.

3. Massive MIMO can be built with inexpensive, low power components.

Massive MIMO reduces the constraints on accuracy and linearity of each

individual amplifier and RF chain.

4. Can improve energy efficiency

Because the base station can focus is emitted energy into the special direction
where it knows that the terminals are located
5. Can reduce interference

Because the base station can purposely avoid transmitting into direction where
spreading interference would be harmful.

6. Massive MIMO enables a significant reduction of latency on the air interface.

7. Massive MIMO simplifies the multiple access layer

8. Increases the robustness against both unintended man-made interference and

intentional jamming.
Benefit of Massive MIMO
Strong link reception performance.

Better interference rejection capability.

High reliability

High spectral efficiency

Massive MIMO Antenna Performance Parameter

Depends on a few parameter

Number of antenna elements define the antenna gain and impact the coverage.

Number of transmitters define the beamforming capability and impacts the

capacity.

Physical and logical configuration of the antenna elements in vertical and

horizontal domain impact the beamforming capability in those dimensions.
Features of Massive MIMO
 Massive(very large)
 Large number of transmitter/Receiver
 More signal path
 High data Rate
 Link reliability
 Complexity increased
Limitation of Massive MIMO

• Channel Reciprocity
• Pilot contamination
• Non CSI(channel state information ) at transmitter
operation
• Distance between users and base station
