Research is defined as the

scientific investigation of
phenomena, which includes
the collection, presentation,
analysis, and interpretation of
data or facts that link man’s
speculation of reality
VALUES OF RESEARCH TO MAN

1) Research improves the quality of life

2) Research improves instruction and
students’ achievements
3) Research reduces the burden of work

4) Research satisfies man’s needs

5) Research improves the exportation of
food products
6) Research improves teacher’s
competence
VALUES OF RESEARCH TO MAN

7) Research responds to the country’s

effort to economic recovery
8) Research trains graduates to respond
to the socioeconomic development of
the society and to compete globally
9) Research makes the country great
again
PERSONAL LEVEL

A research problem is an issue or

concern that an investigator presents
and justifies in a research study

WHAT IS A RESEARCH PROBLEM?

WHY IS
❑It establishes the
importance of the
topic.
❑It creates reader
interest.
❑It focuses the reader’s
attention on how the
study will add to the
literature. PROBLEM
IMPORTANT?
7Ms (Resources) of a Research Problem

1)Manpower
2)Money
3)Materials
4)Methods
5)Machinery
6)Moment of time
7)Marketing
CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH PROBLEM

1) Interesting
2) Relevant to government’s thrust
3) Relevant to the needs and problems of the
people
4) Innovative
5) Cost-effective
6) Inventive
7) Return on investment
8) Original
9) Measurable
10) Time-bound
5 FACTORS TO CONSIDER TO FIND OUT IF A
PROBLEM IS RESEARCHABLE

1) Problem is existing in the locality or country but no

known solution yet
2) The solution to the problem can be answered using
statistical methods and techniques
3) There are probable solutions but not yet tested
4) Occurrence of phenomena requires a scientific
investigation to arrive at a precise solution
5) It is a serious problem of the people that demands
research

A GOOD RESEARCH PROBLEM SHOULD BE
SMART

►S – pecific (stated clearly)

►M – easurable (there are instruments/tools
available to gather data
►A – chievable (results can be attained)
►R – ealistic (data can be gathered
scientifically)
►T - ime-bound (research can be completed
within the specified time frame)
SOURCES OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

1) Specialization – within the

researcher’s expertise or capability
2) Existing and past researches – those
that are already conducted
3) Theses, dissertations, and research
journals
4) Problems met/encountered
5) Creative ideas of the researcher
