WHAT IS A VECTOR?
Vectors
• A vector is a measurable quantity that has both magnitude and
direction. Example Velocity, displacement, acceleration.

• A measurable quantity which is specified by just its magnitude is

called a scalar. Example distance, speed, area
Vectors
• Vectors may be illustrated by an
arrowed line diagram and is
named using the two end points
with an arrow at the top, which
indicates the direction of the
vector, e.g., AB and its
magnitude is represented by the
length.
Vectors
•  If it means “go 4 units in the positive x direction and 2 units in the
positive y direction to move from A to B.
Zero Vectors
• A xero vector, denoted, is a
vector of length 0, and thus
has all the components equal
to zero E.g.
Magnitude of a vector
Unit Vector
•  A unit vector is a vector of length 1 unit. The unit vector in the
direction of a is denoted as â. For example, then

That is, vector b is a unit vector.

Parallel vectors
• Two vectors u and v are parallel if and only if u=kv where k is
constant. That is, when k is a scalar. Hence a non-zero is parallel to all
scalar multiplications of that vector.
