Died: December 5, 1960 (aged 72)
Metro Manila, Philippines
• Filipino architect, best known for Manila's
Metropolitan Theater.
• pursued architecture and was sent to the United
States as one of the first pensionados in
architecture.
• His first passion was painting and he trained
under Lorenzo Guerrero, Toribio Antillon, and
Fabian de la Rosa.

• He is best known for his paintings on various


media that depict scenes in simplified
geometric forms with a folk art character.
• Most of his subjects in art are his hometown,
its people, their everyday activities, and their
celebrations.

• Also known as Carlos "Botong"


Francisco.
• Most distinguished practitioner of mural
painting for many decades and best known
for his historical pieces.
• One of the first Filipino modernists along
with Galo Ocampo and Victorio C. Edades.

• Responsible for revolutionizing the fine arts
landscape of the Philippines.
• He departed from the prevailing style of the
Amorsolo academic and launched the
modernist movement with his fellow founders
of the Modern Triumvirate, Victorio Edades
and Galo Ocampo.

• Second Filipino who received the title of
National Artist in Painting in 1973 after
Fernando Amorsolo.
• Got first prize for his work "Kaingin" at the
annual Art Association of the Philippines.
