• A conjunction is a joiner, a
word that connects (conjoins)
parts of a sentence.
Coordinating Conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions are used
to join two parts of a sentence
that are grammatically equal. The
two parts may be single words or
clauses.
for, and, nor, but, or,
yet, so.
FOR - is to introduce the reason
for the preceding clause.
He prays every day, for he
wants help from God.
AND - joins two similar ideas.
(I like tea and coffee. )
BUT - joins two contrasting ideas.
(I was sick, but I still went to school. )
OR - joins two alternative ideas.
(Grapes are purple or green.)
Yet- joins two contrasting ideas.
My uncle didn’t want to have
surgery, yet he knew he had to.
SO - shows that the second idea
is the result of the first.
(Mariam didn’t study, so she failed in the exams.)

• NOR - Its most common use is as the


little brother in the correlative pair,
neither-nor
• BUT - joins two contrasting ideas.

(I was sick, but I still went to school. )
• OR - joins two alternative ideas.
(Do you want to go, or stay at home?)
• YET - is very similar to 'but' as it also
joins two contrasting ideas together.

• SO - shows that the second idea is the


result of the first.
(Mariam didn’t study, so she failed in the
exams.)
