PHYSICS 1
WEEK 2
WE THANK YOU LORD,
FOR TODAY
YESTERDAY
AND TOMORROW
LET’S HAVE A RECALL
FROM LAST MEETING.

USING JAM BOARD

OBJECTIVES:

● Differentiate accuracy from precision

● Differentiate random errors from systematic
error
● Estimate errors from multiple measurements
of a physical quantity using variance
Analyze the image below.
- What is the image all about?

- What do the dots represent?

- Based on the picture above how can

you differentiate accuracy from
precision?
LET’S TALK ABOUT
ACCURACY AND PRECISION
Accuracy and precision in
measurements are important in many
aspects of the world; may it be in the
field of research, medicine,
electronics/technology, manufacturing,
and among others. Take for example,
inaccurate doses of medicine may
harm patients.
In the same way, inaccurate
measurements used in appliances
for example may cause it to
explode, even might spark fire that
will cause harm to humans and
properties. Even a difference of 0.01
might lead to undesirable results.
ACCURACY
AND
PRECISION
Accuracy refers to the closeness of the
measurement to the true value or
accepted value. On the other hand,
precision refers to the closeness
among several measurements that
have been obtained in the same way.
On the other hand, precision
refers to the closeness among
several measurements that
have been obtained in the same
way.
accuracy is closeness of the
measurements to a specific
value, while precision is the
closeness of the measurements
to each other.
Let us familiarize ourselves with
these measuring instruments to
yield precise and accurate
measurements.
A ruler can measure longer/larger
objects. The smallest scale division.
A vernier caliper allows measuring length
including outside dimensions,inside dimensions
and depth of smaller objects with more precision
and accuracy. It can measure up to or decimal
Micrometer is used to make accurate measurements of
the thickness of a sheet of paper and the external
diameter of thin wires. It can measure up to or decimal
place in.
Students are measuring a similar object
but used a different instrument.
Calculate the average of each set of measurements

27.95 mm 28.246 mm
- Which student's data is more
accurate? Justify your answer.

- Which student's data is more

precise? Justify your answer
What is the difference
between accuracy and
precision?
WHAT IS AN
ERROR
SYSTEMATIC ERROR
- Measurement may be precise but not
accurate

RANDOM ERROR
- The measurement lacks precision but
accurate.
How can you identify random
errors?

What is the importance of the

instruments shown: ruler, caliper,
micrometer.
You, a student as part of your activity, weigh the new golf ball
five times or five trials. The results are as follows:
45.89g
45.91g
46.000g
45.94g
45.90g

The accepted value for the mass of a new golf ball is 45.93.
1. Why do you think there are
differences in measurements? Why
do they vary?
2. What causes error in measurement?
3. What are the two types of error?
Describe each.
4. Give an example for each type of
error.
- Have you committed an error in
your life? What did you do after
committing an error?

- Does your error change your

perspective in life?
