(8 Marks)
LEARNING OUTCOMES-

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

• Clarify energy conservation concept.
• Learn Various forms of energy resources.
• Understand Present Energy Scenario.
• Learn the clauses of energy conservation ACT-2001.
• Learn roles & responsibilities of BEE & MEDA.
• Understand importance of star labelling of electrical equipment. 1
• Topic-1.1. Energy Scenario

• Primary & Secondary Energy

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

2
Energy Demand & Supply-
• Energy demand is the term used to describe the consumption
of energy by human activity.

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

• Energy demand in India is expected to increase over the next
10-15 years; although new oil and gas plants are planned, coal
is expected to remain the dominant fuel for power generation

3
• National Scenario :-

Topic-1.2 - Energy Conservation & Audit- Concept &
Difference.
Energy Conservation:-
 "The strategy of adjusting and optimizing energy, using systems and
procedures so as to reduce energy requirements per unit of output

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

while holding constant or reducing total costs of producing the output
from these systems“.
Energy Conservation is needed as it –
 Reduces rise in energy cost.
 Provides economical solution to energy Shortages.
 Increases environmental value. 5
Topic-2 Energy Conservation & Audit- Concept &
Difference.
Energy Audit :- (As per Indian Energy Conservation Act 2001)
 “The verification, monitoring and analysis of use of energy
including submission of technical report containing

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

recommendations for improving energy efficiency with
cost benefit analysis and an action plan to reduce energy
consumption”.
 Energy Audit provides a " bench-mark“ (Reference point) for managing energy in
the organization and also provides the basis for planning a more effective use of
energy throughout the organization.
 Types Of Energy Audit :- Preliminary Audit & Detailed Audit. 6
Need of Energy Audit :-
 Help to understand more about the ways energy and fuel are used in any
industry, and help in identifying the areas where waste can occur and
where scope for improvement exists.

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

 Give a positive orientation to the energy cost reduction, preventive
maintenance and quality control programmes which are vital for
production and utility activities.
 Energy Audit is the translation of conservation ideas into realities .
 To determine ways to reduce energy consumption per unit of product
output or to lower operating costs. 7
Topic-1.3- Energy Conservation Act- 2001 . (Relevant Clauses of
Energy Conservation).
The act empowers the central government & in some instances, state
government too-
1) Specify energy consumption standards for notified equipment's
& appliances.

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

2) Direct mandatory display of label on notified equipment &
appliances

8
3) Prohibit manufacturer, sale, purchase & import of notified equipment
& appliances not confirming to energy consumption standards.
4) Notify energy intensive industries, other establishments &
commercial buildings as designated consumers.
5) Establish & Prescribe Energy Conservation Building Codes (ECBC)
for efficient use of energy & its conservation in new commercial
buildings.
6) Direct designated consumers to:-

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

 Appoint certified energy auditor
 Energy audit
 Furnish information for energy consumption
 Comply with energy consumption norms & standards.
 Prepare & implement schemes for efficient use of energy & its conservation, if the
prescribed energy consumption norms & standards are not fulfilled. 9
 Get energy audit in interval of time.
Topic-1.4.- BEE & Its role
BEE (Bureau Of Energy Efficiency)
 A national level organization constituted by the government of India to
promote, disseminate energy efficient measures in all sectors including
industrial and all areas where energy is being used.
 It achieves this by providing the proper platform of training and evaluation
of energy measures feasible for implementation to achieve major savings

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

in energy consumption without affecting the quality of the output.
 Objectives of BEE:-
1) Implementation of provisions of Energy Conservation Act.
2) To co-ordinate policies & programmes on efficient use of energy & it’s
conservation with the involvement of stakeholders.
3) To establish system & procedure to monitor & verify energy efficiency results.
4) To plan , manage energy conservation programmes as mentioned in energy
conservation act. 10
Functions of BEE:-
 Arrange & organize training of personnel & specialists in the techniques for efficient use of
energy & its conservation.
 Promotion of Energy Efficiency
 Development of new financial instruments.

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

 Awareness Creation.
 Prepare standards and labels of appliances and equipment; specify certification and
accreditation procedures; prepare building codes;
 Maintain Central EC fund;
 Undertake promotional activities in coordination with Centre and state
level agencies;
 Develop Energy Service Companies (ESCOs); 11
• Topic-1.5.- MEDA & Its role

MEDA :- ( Maharashtra Energy Development Agency)

State level organization in Maharashtra constituted by the government of Maharashtra
that works for the promotion of energy efficiency in all sectors.

Roles & responsibilities :-

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

 Identify potential locations for the training Workshops.
 Identify organizations who can organize the training program.
 All the financial help for such programs.
 Work for promotions of energy efficiency in all sectors.

12
Topic-1.6.- STAR Labelling- Need & Its Benefits
STAR Labelling-
• Star rating is a measure of energy efficiency of appliances.
• The energy star service marks is awarded to certified energy efficient
products, homes, commercial buildings & industrial plants.

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

• Star rating schemes allow us to compare the operating cost and
environmental performance of similar products. This allows us to make
better choices and see the potential
ongoing future costs and greenhouse gas
impacts our decisions may have.
13
• Its Five point Scale.
Need of STAR Labelling-
 Prevent manufacturer, sale & import od such equipment,

which does not meet the standards.

 Introduce mandatory labelling schemes for notified

Prof. Ms. H.A.Badgujar

equipment & appliances to enable consumers to make correct choices.
 Spread information on needs to consumer.

Benefits of STAR Labelling-

 Provide high quality products in market.

 Energy & money saving for consumer.

 Promoting healthy competition in consumers appliance product category through

14
market transformation.
 Controlling extra power generation & reducing overall carbon emission.
