Lesson 3: Modals,
Adverbs and Nouns
This module was designed and written with you in mind. Its purpose is
to help develop writing skills emphasizing unity, coherence and
cohesion through appropriate use of modal verbs, nouns and adverbs.
The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them
can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

Modal verbs are helping/auxiliary
verbs that give additional information
about the function of the main verb
that follows. As a type of auxiliary
verb, and one that reportedly accounts
for fifteen percent of all verb usage,
modal verbs are clearly an important
aspect of language learning. From an
academic’s perspective, while it’s true
that modal verbs are used much more
commonly in speech than in academic
writing, modal verbs still allow the
speaker or writer to express.

Modals are different from

➢ They don't use an 's' for the

third person singular.
➢ They make questions by
inversion ('she can go' becomes
'can she go?’).
➢ They are followed directly by
the infinitive of another verb
(without 'to').

Adverbs help explain what the
verb is doing, this helps the
audience picture how something
was done. Adverbs also describe
what and how things are done in
literature. Adverbs are great in
writing because they help show
sophistication and can help
expand your vocabulary.
Nouns are important because they
refer to places, objects and people
and the more sophisticated abstract
concepts. Without nouns, you will
be left with verbs, adjectives and
adverbs. The lack of nouns will
eradicate any subject or object from
your sentence which is as good as
communication essentially nothing.
Nouns can be found in different parts of the sentence. They perform
several functions depending on where they are in the sentence and
what other words come before or after them. Below are the
