DEFINITION

A 3PL is commonly used in outsourced logistics and supply-chain

management to outsource a company’s shipping and fulfillment
services, which can include:

Transportation
Warehousing
Materials procurement
Inventory management
Customs brokerage
Freight audit
Payment
Shipment tracking
FOUR FUNCTIONS OF 3PL PROVIDERS

Shipping & Transportation Warehousing Distribution

Receiving
1. Shipping and Receiving
• Shipping and receiving 3PL providers are focused on the management
of the shipping process from start to finish. Often, these companies
feature technology, usually a transportation management system
(TMS), or integrated freight management services.
2. Transportation
• Transportation 3PL providers are responsible for the actual transport of
goods or services between locations. A common example is when a
3PL provider manages an inventory shipment between a company and
the buyer.
3. Warehousing
• Warehousing 3PL providers are one of the most common types of
third-party logistics providers.
4. Distribution
• Many 3PL organizations also provide a wide variety of distribution and
wholesale services, including outbound order fulfillment, picking and
packing, custom labeling, and manufacturing.
Objectives of a 3PL Provider
• Enhanced Customer Service: One of the most
important things that any business, regardless
of the nature of its operation should strive
towards is better customer service.
• Enhanced Efficiency: Efficient service is one of
the most important things that ensure the
success of the business. Hence, 20Cube
logistics constantly works towards securing
enhanced efficiency in all aspects of service.
• Fast Response: In some cases, the efficiency of the service
of an organization is measured against the length of their
response. In logistics, this is especially important.
• Decreasing Distribution Costs: One of the ever-present
long term goals that most logistics companies have is the
reduction of costs. By decreasing transportation and
warehousing costs, the business can ensure increased
profits and also attract more customers with attractive
rates.
• Better Customer Relationships: This can be ensured only
when the above-mentioned objectives are realized. As the
success of a logistics business is solely dependent on how
the potential customers perceive them, most third-party
logistics providers make sure that the customers are happy
and satisfied with the service provided.

Conclusion

It is becoming a widespread practice in

industry worldwide. In the future, outsourcing
logistics functions to 3PLs is still a major trend,
but the rate of growth may decrease. In the
past, 3PL used to provide services such as
warehousing and transportation, which is
single and short-term logistics service
