The Union Cabinet chaired by the
Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi approved
the flagship "Namami Gange" programme
which integrates the efforts to clean and
protect the Ganga River in a comprehensive
manner in June 2014 with budget outlay of
Rs.20,000 Crore to accomplish the twin
objectives of effective abatement of pollution,
conservation and rejuvenation of National River
Ganga. The programme is implemented by
National Mission on Clean Ganga along with its
State Programme Management Groups.
Importance of Ganga Basin in India

• Geographical coverage is the largest – 26% of India’s land mass

• Most populated basin – hosts 43% of India’s population
• Second highest average annual surface water potential – 28% of India’s total –
second only to combined potential of Brahmaputra, Barack & others
• 38% of India’s total estimated utilizable water comes from Ganga Basin –
highest amongst all
• Estimated utilizable surface water in Ganga is 48% of its total potential as
compared to 4% for Brahmaputra
• Total surface and groundwater storage in Ganga basin is largest –
groundwater share is 64%
• Nearly 40% of India’s total estimated replenishable ground water resources
comes from Ganga Basin

About the project Drain discharge into river ganga
near my hometown
The ganga river, the largest river in India, poses significant threats
to human health and the larger environment.
A number of initiatives have been undertaken to clean the river
but failed to deliver as desired results. After getting elected, India's
Prime minister Narendra Modi affirmed to work in cleaning the
river and controlling pollution.Subsequently, the namami
Gange project was announced by the government in the June 2014
.Namami gange project maked a good impact on the peoples mind
about to clean ganga river, when this project is announced ,people
collect the garbage from the side of the river ganga and
municipality workers also working there .
I went to the side of the ganga river and there are waste all over
around.
Challenges faced by India’s River ganga
• Increase in water pollution
• Partially or untreated municipal sewage –
75% of the pollution load to streams & water
bodies
• Estimated sewage generation in India –
62000 MLD
• Treatment capacity available only for 32% of
sewage generated (CPCB, 2015)
• Industries contribute approximately 25% of
the pollution load – highly toxic in nature
• Contamination of groundwater with heavy
metals– arsenic, fluoride, iron, etc
• The sewage system is connected into river
and all the waste product is are gathered
around there.
• The Ganges faces a lot of serious challenges,
mainly because of the fast growth of cities,
agriculture and industries in recent decades.
Too much water is being removed for
farming and other uses, barrages and dams
disrupt the Ganges’ natural flow, and
pollution from homes and industries have
badly contaminated what’s left of this once
mighty, free-flowing river.
• It’s having a negative impact on a lot of
people, as well as on precious wildlife like
the Ganges river species(fish, dolphin) R.P. Ghat Sewage Outfall at Main
Bathing Ghat
My contribution
• I went to the ghat near ganga river ,so much plastic and wastage was
there. Me and my friends (work with some ngo) collect plastic garbage
nearby there was a small dustbin and we put all the stuff into it.
• Me with my friends made some poster for not throw waste into the
river.
• Near my village there was a place where people direct throw the waste
into the river and going for taking bath and washing clothes, for stoping
we were go to the municipal department and told about the problem
then a worker came with us and we made a boundary and
• Put a notice on a board and placed near boundary.
Initiative and work done by us:
• Plant trees near ganga river.
• Create boundaries for safety.
• Collect garbage and try to increase
awareness about to clean ganga river .
