Ganga river
• The ganga is the largest river in India and second greatest
river in the world with an extraordinary religious
importance for Hindus.
• Worshipped a goddess ganga in Hinduism .
• Along its bank are some of the world oldest inhabited
places like Varanasi and Patna .
• It provides water to about 40% of India's population in 11
states.
• In modern time it is known for being very polluted .

Ill effects of ganga pollution
• 66% incidence of waterborne/enteric diseases occurs including acute gastrointestinal diseases:-
cholera,dysentery,hepatitis – A and typhoid .
• High level of coliform bacteria in the ganga makes it unfit for agricultural use let alone drinking
and bathing .
• A study conducted by the (NCRP) in 2012 suggested that “those living along its
banks in UP, Bihar and Bengal are more prone to cancer than anywhere else in
the country". The survey indicated that gallbladder cancer cases along the river
course are the 2nd highest in the world and prostate cancer highest in the
country .
• The Ganges River dolphin is one of the few species of freshwater dolphins in
the world that perform hydroelectric and irrigation dams along the Ganges
that prevent the dolphins from traveling up and down the river, largely due to
a reduction in population.
Ganga action plan
• The ganga action plan (GAP) was a program
launched by shri Rajeev Gandhi on 14th Jan 1986 in r
to reduce the pollution load on the ganga river.
• It also included the tributaries of ganga namely
Yamuna,gomati,damodar,mahananda
FAILURE OF GAP
• The gap was not able to achieve its objectives, despite total expenditure of Rs 901.71 crore
over period of 15 years.
• Inappropriate environmental planning
• Insignificant cooperation b/w central government & local government bodies
• Lack of local technical experts for monitoring
• Improper mass awareness and involvement of Ganga users in different projects.
• Least political dedication and vision to save Ganga.
• U.P and Bihar were not able to provide uninterrupted electricity for running the facilities.
