INTRDUCTION
• 1. The river Ganga is the 20th longest river in Asia and the 41st longest in theworld
occupying a special position in the ethos of the people of India.
2 . The Ganga is unique among several other rivers of the world
• because of its delta – the Sunderbans – which is the world's largest delta.
• 3. The Ganges is a trans-boundary river of Asia which flows through

• India and Bangladesh.


• 4. The 2,525 km river rises in the western Himalayas in the Indian state

• of Uttarakhand.
• 5. It is one of the major rivers of india which is approximately 1557
• Miles long
FACTORS CAUSING POLLUTION TO GANGES
1. The main causes of water pollution in the Ganges river are the disposal of human sewage and animal waste,
increasing population density, and disposal of industrial waste into the river.
2. River Ganga was polluted by human activities like bathing, washing, industrial effluents and also by
disease causing microorganisms.
3. Coliform is a group of bacteria, found in human intestine, whose presence
in water indicates contamination by disease causing microorganisms.
4. The result of this pollution is an array of water-borne diseases including
cholera, hepatitis, typhoid and amoebic dysentery.
5. An estimated 80% of all health problems and one-third of deaths in
India are attributable to water-borne diseases.
REVIVAL OF RIVER GANGA
1. The Himalayas are the source of three major Indian rivers namely the Indus, the Ganga and the
Brahmaputra.
2. The main objective of Ganga Action Plan are (i)To improve the water
quality by Interception, Diversion and treatment of domestic sewage.
3. (ii) Present toxic and industrial chemical wastes from identified grossly
polluting units entering in to the river.
4. The works of started with the launching of the Ganga Action Plan (GAP)
Phase-I in the year 1985.
5. The Government should not allow to release the toxic chemical of
factories or throw any nuclear waste to river ganga or any river.
SUGGESTIONS
• 1. Cleaning up of the Ganges.
• 2. Setting up of waste treatment plants.
• 3. Conservation of biotic diversity of the river.
• 4.Development of public amenities.
• 5. Activities such as Ghat redevelopment and Research and Development
• and innovative projects.
• 6. Since 2011, the World Bank has been providing financial and technical
• assistance to the government of India through the National Ganga River
• Basin Project.
