GAMABA ARTIST INSPIRATION:
SAMAON SULAIMAN
In creating my mask and face shield I was inspired by Samaon
Sulaiman, him being my top GAMABA
Artist idol. He was able to produce a wond-
-erful work of art in terms of music using
only two strings in his kudyapi. Like him
, with only the limited materials I have in
my home, I was able to create my design.

Short Narrative
• My design in both masks is inspired by the Negritos and batok tattoos. The color black is based on the depiction of negritos
having dark skinned complexions. The crown represents them being the first tribe who came to the Philippines through the
Lupang Tulay. Said crown represents them as being the first rulers of the motherland since they are the pioneer civilization
who lived and cultivated the land through their ways and beliefs. The gold design represents them being depicted as
beautiful and abundant people, their culture being rich and prosperous in the rich history of the Philippines. The color red in
their eeys represents them as being fierce warriors, people nowadays misrepresent them as scared and easily intimidated,
but I see them as brave fighters who defended our motherland from first invaders and early colonizers. The hidden black
diamond, represents them carrying hidden gems and treasures with regards to their abundant culture. It also represents them
as being strong and resilient all throughout the ages since they came in the Philippines centuries ago. The cross represents
them as being converted to Roman catholic from the moment the Spaniards invaded the Philippines. The design on the face
mask is based from the scorpion design on batok tattoos by the last mambabatok ,butbut ,and living legend, Apo Whang-Od
Oggay. What I learned in this activity is to be patient, creative, and resourceful. At first I was worried that I do not have any
art materials available in my home but I tried to calm myself and utilize anything I can find. While doing the activity I was
also worried that my design isn’t that good and it keeps me from being motivated, but I practiced patientce throughout the
procedure and eventually became satisfied every step. The glue keeps on sticking on my hands and its hard to stick each
pattern one by one, yet I still managed to finish my work. The best thing about this activity is that I had fun doing it.
