“ A network or rather a Computer
Network is a collection of
devices connected through a
medium such as a Router to
communicate and share
resources

“ Computer Networks are usually
connected by physical cables
such as Ethernet cords or
maintain wireless connections.
IP Addresses are how devices
identify each other on the
network.

▸ The Internet is merely a connection of all of the
world’s networks together in sync
▸ Routers are the connectors/separators of each of
the networks
▸ The World Wide Web is growing in terms of
networks and users constantly
*As of 2020, 59% of the world’s population has
access to the internet with 4.66 Billion users

Types of Devices used
in a Network
End Devices
Servers, Desktop
Computers, Laptops,
Tablets, & Smart Phones are
examples of the end devices
that serve as an interface
between the end user and the
network.
Network Devices
Routers, Modems, Switches,
Wireless Access Points, Cell
Towers are network devices
that are the medium that end
devices use to connect to other
end devices on other networks.

▸ Network Devices serves as go-betweens for End
Device communication.

▸ Each point (Node) between each device is linked
by a connector (wired or wireless) that makes up
the layout or Topology of
this network.

▸ Nodes use the connections to transmit data (packets) to devices on
the network and other networks. To specify where each packet is
sent IP Addresses are used to designate where the packets are
delivered.

Naming Resolutions
▸ An IP Address is an unique number usually
assigned by a router to identify each of the end
devices on that network.
▸ IP addresses also are assigned to other network
devices, websites, and almost any other device
that is connected to the internet.
▸ IP addresses can also be used to locate the origin
of devices and networks.
▸ Example of an IP Address 192.168.10.52

Host Names
Host Names are designated
to end devices such as
Desktop Computers,
Laptops, Tablets, & Smart
Phones for users to identify
which device is which on a
network
Domain Name
This is what the user types into
the URL (the search bar where
you type in web address) to
access a website. An issue that
comes up is computers recognize
IP Address while users
remember Domain Names

Naming Resolutions
▸ Domain Name System (DNS) was developed as a resource
where computers can link the IP Address that they need to gain
access to a website with the domain name the user inputs in
the URL.
▸ Just like a person lists the names of their contacts in their
phone, the phone needs to use the actual telephone number to
dial the call. Your contact list does the same thing as a DNS
linking the numbers to the names
