its founder Dr. S.I. Ortom as the CEO. Dr. S. I. Ortom raised the
organization through which he would use to reduce the level of
unemployment and poverty in the society.
The organization is one of the leading private establishments in
middle belt with over 1000 permanent staff, apprentices and
students on industrial training who are fully committed to the
company’s vision.

UNIT OPERATIONS IN THE FEED MILL
In feed mill production have the following unit
operation:
a) Material and energy conservation
b) Heat transfer theory
c) Fluid flow
d) Size reduction
e) Mixing
f) Mechanical separation

MAINTENANCE CARRIED OUT ON VARIOUS EQUIPMENT

Boiler Maintenance
 Inspecting and cleaning fireside surfaces and clear all
manhole gaskets for leaks.
 Inspect and test all system valves and test all safety valves.
 Recalibrating all operating controls and Overhaul feed water
pumps.
 Cleaning and inspecting chimneys.
 Checking oil circulation temperature at sidearm pre-heaters.
Inlet temperature should be 110° F to 120° F, and outlet
temperature should be 140° F to 150° F for No. 6 oil (daily).
 Checking oil pressure reading at the burners and Clean oil
filters at least twice a week:
 Flush drain low water cut-offs/sidearm oil pre-heater (twice
a week).
 Conduct boiler bottom blow down to clear sludge and
sediment, control high water, and control chemical
treatment concentrations (monthly or as needed).
 Monitor smoke alarm on a weekly basis:
 Maintain a rigorous boiler chemical feed water treatment
program.
 Check combustion, inspect burner controls, and inspect
burner operation.
 Conduct trap inspection program with replacement of trap
elements in apartment units and steam traps within the
cellar.
 Conduct pipe inspection program to ensure all pipes are
pitched in the direction of steam source (one-pipe steam
systems) or condensate drainage (two-pipe systems).
PELLET MILL MAINTENANCE
The bearings, die and rollers are parts which have to be checked regularly .

Bearings: The main bearings

must be lubricated every 100-
200 hours. The lubrication
operation of the roller
bearings should be between
10-220 grams per hour
depending on the size of the
pellet mill.

MAINTENANCE OF HAMMER MILL
Hammers are one of the most important parts that wear out and affect the
performance of the machine. In order to prevent this abrasion, the hammer mill is
run in the clockwise direction one day and in the counter-clockwise direction the
following day. By this mode of operation, two corners are equally eroded.
Screen sheets: After a certain working time, the holes on the screen sheet will
widen and exceed the desired magnitude. And this affects the milling performance
negatively and reduces the quality of the feed. Therefore, the screens should be
replaced after a certain operating time.
Bearings: Bearings must be lubricated once for every 1300 hours operation period.
Besides, their temperature should be checked regularly. The temperatures above 50-
60 ° C are a precursor for the lubrication time or the time for replacement of
bearings.
Coupling: The barrel-shaped rubbers of the couplings with a pin must be checked
for a deformation and replaced if necessary.
A hammer mill is a machine that can break down grains and other grained raw
materials to desired sizes.

SKILLS GAINED DURING THE TRAINING

 General routine maintenance of systems.

 Time an resource management skills.

 Team work.

 Responsibility.

 Good communication skills.

CHALLENGES FACED
 The IT students are not given the opportunity to operate the machines in the
industry, as a result of their company policy which states that the machines
should only be handled/operated by a the operators.
 Getting a place for my IT was a problem because of the economic state of
the country as some of the company stopped taking IT students. There are
only few establishments who have in their possession the required plants,
equipment and machines especially for technical based courses coupled with
the required technical staff needed to impart the required training and
knowledge.
 The cost of transportation to and fro the company on a daily basis was really
high considering the fact that I was not being paid.
CONCLUSION
The six (6) months industrial attachment as an intern at Oracle Feed mill Nig.
Ltd was successful and interesting, it made me productive and improved my
acquisition of knowledge and skills. This training helped me to blend
theoretical knowledge acquired from school with the practical-hands
application of knowledge gained here to perform very important tasks that
contributed in a way to my productivity in the company.
