Introduction
What is Geography?
Introduction
● Etymologically, the term geography is derived from the
Greek work “geographia” which may be translated as
“earth description”. Today as in past, geography is a
broad division of human knowledge which is concerned
with the study of the surface of the earth and its relation
to the activities of mam.

● Geography - broken down means “to study the earth

However to study geography is:
1. to study where we are in the world;
2. to study what the world around us is like.
3. It is the study of who lives there and why.
4. It can be the study of foods they people eat, clothes they wear, cars
they drive, and homes they live in.
5. It is the study of climate, land, economies, politics and culture.
6. Like many of the disciplines in the social sciences, it is a discipline
that weaves the threads of the others.

For example:
• How are the people in the picture
above dressed?
• Why might people in this place wear
clothing like this?
• If you notice the fur hoods
surrounding their faces you might
