what is reading ?
Reading :

Reading is a skill which enables us to get a message ,recognizing the written words and getting the meaning.

Academic Reading:
Academic Reading is defined as reading with a specifically academic and educational purpose. Academic reading includes reading more traditional books, dictionaries, encyclopaedias.

Importantance of Reading :

Reading is important because a good reader can understand


the individual sentence and organization structure of a piece of
writing. The following points will enlighten your horizon in this

Levels of Reading
There are four types of reading
levels:

 Elementary Reading
 Inspectional Reading
 Analytical Reading
 Synoptical Reading
 Elementary Reading :

Reading at this level is simple and easy. This reading level corresponds to that of grade
Seven. and eight.

 Inspectional Reading :
This kind reading is the beginning of a mindful reading.
The reader here is like a detective, he skims, pre-reads, examines
the title page and contents before reading the whole book.
 Analytical Reading :

Analytical reading requires a higher degree of attentiveness to the details


of the books, the structure of the text, and the message of the author.

 Synoptical Reading:

In synoptical reading, you are reading a wide variety of works on the same
topic with the purpose of constituting a general view or take on subject under
study.
Types of Reading
There are two main types of
Reading:

 Intensive Reading
 Extensive Reading
Intensive reading

 Intensive reading is used to teach or practice specific reading strategies or


skills .
 The text is treated as an end itself.
 Intensive reading involves learners reading in detail with specific learning
aims and tasks.
 It consumes more time of the reader.
Extensive Reading

 Extensive reading is a reading as much as possible, for your own pleasure,


at a difficulty level at which you can read smoothly and quickly without
looking up words.
 Extensive reading includes:
 Don't use dictionary.
 Skip parts you don't understand.
 Read as much as possible.
Reading Techniques
The following techniques are
used in reading

 Skimming
 Scanning
Skimming

 Skimming is a method of rapid reading which will help you understand the
overall theme or general meaning of the text.
 Skimming is quick method of reading.
 Skimming works well to identify dates, names, places or specific items.
How is skimming done??
Steps in skimming an article:

 Read the title.


 Read the introduction.
 Read the first paragraph completely.
 Read the subheadings.
 Read the first sentence of each paragraph.
 Read the final paragraph completely.
Scanning

 Scanning involves getting your eyes quickly scuttle across sentence and is
used to get simple information.
 In scanning you must be willing to skip over large sections of text
without reading them.
 Scanning can be done 1500 or more words per minute.
How is scanning done?
Steps in scanning an article:

 Keep in your mind all time what it is you looking for.


 Analyze the organization of content before starting to scan.
 Let your eyes run rapidly over text.
 Read the entire sentence you find informative.
How to develop your system
of reading
Following are the ways to develop your
reading system

 Read before you mark


Underlining
Marginal notes
Be selective
Use other words
 Read the summary
Read before you mark:

First read the paragraph or section then


mark the important words or information.

Underlining :
Underlining key words and sentences will make
those items stand out in the mind.
Marginal notes :

These notes give you opportunity to question a statement or position taken by author.

Be selective :
Underline only those points that
are clearly essential.
Use other words :

Use simple and easy words tow understand the meaning of the text.

Read the summary :


A summary contains only the main idea
in the text .If you know the main idea it makes
you reading fluent.
