Introduction to Reading
What is Reading?

Reading is a skill which enables us to get a message ,recognizing the written words and getting the meaning.

Academic Reading:
Academic Reading is defined as reading with a specifically academic and educational purpose. Academic reading includes reading more traditional books, dictionaries, encyclopaedias.
The Importance of Reading
Reading is important because a good reader can understand the individual sentence and organization
structure of a piece of writing. The following points will enlighten your horizon in this regard:

 Improve Understanding
 Gain Experience from Other

 Preparation to action
 Expose yourself to new things:
Exploration begins from reading and understanding. Through reading ,you

expose new ways to solve a problem and new ways to achieve one thing

 Self improvement:
Reading does help you form a better you. Through reading
you have a great understanding on a topic that interests you.
 Improve understanding:
The more you read,the more you understand
one thing. Reading also increase the
understanding of the rules of life.

Reading is a starting step of many
things, which build a more solid stair for you to
climb up achieving some thing.

When you are reading you are gaining the knowledge
and experience of someone. Through reading books You
gain new ideas and thoughts of people.
Levels of Reading
There are four types of reading
levels:

 Elementary Reading
 Inspectional Reading
 Analytical Reading
 Synoptical Reading
 Elementary Reading :
Reading at this level is simple and easy. This reading
level corresponds to that of grade Seven and eight.

 Inspectional Reading :
This kind reading is the beginning
of a mindful reading. The reader here is
like a detective, he skims, pre-reads,
examines the title page and contents
before reading the whole book.
 Analytical Reading :

Analytical reading requires a higher degree of attentiveness to the details of the books, the structure of the
text, and the message of the author.

 Synoptical Reading:

In synoptical reading, you are reading a


wide variety of works on the same topic
with the purpose of constituting a general
view or take on subject under study.
Types of Reading
There are two main types of
Reading:

 Intensive Reading
 Extensive Reading
Intensive reading

 Intensive reading is used to teach or


practice specific reading strategies or
skills .
 The text is treated as an end itself.
 Intensive reading involves learners
reading in detail with specific learning
aims and tasks.
 It consumes more time of the reader.
Extensive Reading

 Extensive reading is a reading as much as possible,


for your own pleasure, at a difficulty
level at which you can read smoothly
and quickly without looking up words.
 Extensive reading includes:
 Don't use dictionary.
 Skip parts you don't understand.
 Read as much as possible.
Reading Techniques
The following techniques are

 Skimming
 Scanning
Skimming

 Skimming is a method of rapid reading


which will help you understand the overall
theme or general meaning of the text.
 Skimming is quick method of reading.
 Skimming works well to identify dates,
names, places or specific items.
Scanning

 Scanning involves getting your eyes quickly


scuttle across sentence and is used to get
simple information.
 In scanning you must be willing to skip
over large sections of text without
reading them.
 Scanning can be done 1500 or more words
per minute.
How to develop your
system of reading
Following are the ways to
develop your reading system
Mark key words and central idea.
ChoOse easy material when you begin
speed reading.
 Use a pointer or device to help your mark
key words and main idea.
Read before you mark.
Underline only those points that are
clearly essential.
