Reading short notes for advanced students

Reading
It is an important skill of a language. It is an occasion in which pieces of literature
are read for example, poetry, stories, novels, books, newspapers…. In other
words, reading is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting
meaning from them.
Importance of reading:
It makes you knowledgeable and motivate your imagination. It also
improves your communication skills, memory and vocabulary.
Importantly, it effects on your writing skill, too. A study in the university
of Sussex showed that reading reduces stress by 60%. It helps in
reducing tension and relaxing muscles which in turn helps people sleep
better and stay healthy. It exercises the brain and increase general
knowledge.
Types of reading:
1= Skimming:
Refers to looking only for the general or main ideas and works with real
nonfiction(factual) materials. With skimming your overall understanding
is reduced because you don’t read everything. You read only what is
important to your purpose. For example, when we want to skim a
paragraph we just read the topic sentence one or two supporting
sentences and the concluding sentence. There are three types of
skimming Preview, overview and review. Previewing Looking over our
reading materials in order to become familiar with its content before you
actually begin reading it. Overview A short description of something that
provides general information about it but no details. Review to view or
see again. To study or examine again.

2- Scanning:
It is a reading technique to be used when you want to find specific
information quickly. In scanning you have a question in your mind and
you read the passage only to find the answer, ignoring unrelated
information. Scanning is commonly used in every day’s life, for example
when looking up a word in dictionary or finding your friend’s name in the
contacts directory of your phone.
3- Intensive reading:
Intensive reading involves learners reading in details with specific
learning aims. We systematically look up every word, phrase or
collection that you do not understand
4- Extensive reading:
It involves leaners reading texts for enjoyment and to develop general
reading skills. The purpose of extensive reading is to encourage reading
fluency. The learners read large quantities of texts in this reading.
Main Idea:
The main idea is the central point of or thought the author wants to
communicate to readers. The main idea answers the question “what
does the author want me to know about?” often the author states the
main idea in a single sentence.
Cluster:
Trains you to look at groups of words instead of one at time to increase
your speed enormously. For most of us clustering is a totally deferent
way of seeing what we read.
