PEOPLE SAY THAT A GOOD TIME TO VISIT IS
BETWEEN MAY AND AUGUST, WHEN THERE
ISN'T TOO MUCH RAINAND IT ISN'T TOO
HOT.

It's winter in South Africathen and there isn't so

much vegetation,so you can see the wildlife better. Also
it'sthe low season, so the prices are low
SOUTH AFRICA IS FAMOUS FOR ITS DIVERSE
WILDLIFE. IT HASMANY KINDS OF WILD
ANIMALS. BUT THE ONES EVERY BODY WANTS
TO SEE ARE THE BIG FIVE. THEY ARE THE
AFRICANELEPHANT, THE AFRICAN RHINO, THE
AFRICAN LEOPARD, THE AFRICAN LION AND THE
CAPE BUFFALO.

They're called the Big Five not because they're the

biggest animals, but because they can be the most
dangerous.
BEFORE 1994 PEOPLE WERE SEGREGATED IN SOUTH
AFRICA. FOR EXAMPLE, NON-WHITE PEOPLE HAD TO
LIVE OUTSIDE TOWNS AND CITIES IN POOR AREAS
CALLED TOWNSHIPS. PEOPLE WERE SEGREGATED IN
PLACES LIKE STADIUMS, PARKS, PUBLIC TOILETS, AND
ON BUSES AND TRAINS. THEY ALSO HAD TO GO TO
DIFFERENT SCHOOLS

It was difficult for non-whitepeople to get good

jobs, and many were poor. This racist system was
called apartheid. Moreand more people protested
against it. Some,
LIKE NELSON MANDELA, WERE SENT TO
PRISON FOR ALONG TIME. IN 1990
MANDELA WAS RELEASED FROM PRISON.
APARTHEID WAS ENDED, AND IN 1994
HECAME PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA.
