Theorems of Triangle

Inequalities
Exterior Angle Inequality | Triangle Inequality | Hinge Theorem
At the end of this lesson learners will be able to:

a)Illustrate theorems on a triangle inequalities (Exterior

Angle Inequality Theorem, Triangle Inequality
Theorem, Hinge Theorem);
b)Apply theorems on triangle inequalities; and
c)Prove inequalities in a triangle.
Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem
Interior Angles
All the angles inside the triangle
are interior angles.

Remote Interior Angles

are those that don’t share a
Exterior Angles vertex
or corner of a triangle with the
D C A exterior angle.
Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem
Remote Interior Angles

∠D > ∠B
∠D > ∠A
The exterior angle theorem
D C A states that the measure of each
exterior angle of a triangle is
equal to the sum of the opposite
and non-adjacent interior
∠D= ∠A+∠B angles (two remote interior
angles)
If ∠B = 45 ° and A=85 °, find ∠D.
B
∠D= ∠A+∠B
∠D= ∠85 °+∠ 45
°
∠D= 130°
D C A
Solve for x.
50°
130° = 50° + x
Subtraction property of
equality
130° - 50° = 50° - 50° + x
simplify
x
80° = x
130°
Solve for x.
(6x)°
(x+115)° = 70° + (6x)°
x+115 = 70 + 6x
simplify
70 °
x-6x = 70-115
(x+115)°
-5x = -45
Multiplication property of
equality x=9
Triangle inequality Theorem
Example:
Can a triangle be constructed with sides of lengths 3 cm,
7 cm, and 8 cm?
Solution:
3+7 > 8
7+8 > 3
3+8 > 7

The sum of any two lengths is greater than the third length. Therefore,
a triangle can be constructed.
Example:
Can a triangle be constructed with sides of lengths 8 cm, 14 cm, and 7
cm?

The sum of any two lengths is greater than the third length. Therefore,
a triangle can be constructed.
HINGE Theorem
