INTRODUCTION

Activity – To design a cultural museum by taking a city as example

for its culture and a heritage building to depict its features in your
design museum

Cultural museum – It is a museum which promotes culture and

arts . It conserves a collection of artifacts and other objects of
artistic , cultural , historic importance .
Description – I have chosen a vernacular building setup for designing a
cultural museum . Vernacular buildings, square or rectangle in plan,
are oriented strictly to the cardinal directions. This makes the spatial
planning more perfect to control its environment with maximum
comfort in all distinct seasons. Building orientation helps in minimizing
heat penetration (through windows, walls, roofs) and maximizing cross
ventilation.

The courtyard act as microclimate modifiers centrally located and are

completely opened to the sky. The courtyard provides comfort
throughout the day. During night, cool night air descends into the
courtyard and the surrounding rooms.
Courtyard has been effectively used in designing residences with
multiple courtyards, where varying privacy gradients are
respected .

The hierarchical positions of Central Courtyard, Verandah and

inner spaces provide an organization of activities from one place
to the other in relation to climate entrances & passages. The walls
are very thick & strongly built. There are absolutely no windows
on ground floor, only narrow slits or small holes are built in wall).
The buildings are close to each other to form a dense cluster
which allows mutual shading by buildings reduces the area of
exposed surfaces and provides shaded pedestrian walk area.

FEATURES
We have been given site in Gulbarga and we had to study the
geography , history of gulbarga before designing the museum

I analysed the site and started with our design problem

SITE SURROUNDING
Vernacular charecters are implemented in design . The entrance
has a ticket counter and a waiting opposite to each other which
has a sloping roof made from shaabad stones . The arrangement
of blocks are in hierarchy of spaces

Two information desks are provided,1 is covered with LCD display

and the other is semi open

The exhibition halls are arranged around courtyards .There are 4

exhibition halls of which 3 are covered and 1 is semi covered for
display of art ,culture ,history ,sculpture of Gulbarga
MATERIAL USED
The material used for the construction of wall were sun dried
bricks . The roofing material was Reinforced concrete cement
and shaabad stones .

Play of light and patterns can be seen in the design of this

museum which looks attractive
