DAYLIGHTING |CL - I
BRIEF:
The objective of this assignment is to use the daylighting rules of thumb from class to estimate the daylit area of a given.
building massing as well as to rank a series of massing proposal.
Apply the daylighting rules of thumb to the L-shaped single storey building shown and predict the percentage of
the daylit area.
Assume the windows wraps around the entire building for calculation purposes. The total
building floor area is 2450m2.
If a façade passes the daylight feasibility test for shading from neighboring buildings, you may ignore the neighboring
buildings for further analysis.
Otherwise, assume that spaces adjacent to severely overshadowed façades are not daylit.

• In a sidelit space with a standard window and venetian blinds, the

depth of the daylight area usually lies between 1.5-2 times the
window- head-height

You are being presented with five massing schemes for a single office building below.
Each geometry has an area of 2500m2 +/- 10%, and a window-to-wall ratio is the same on all orientations.
The façade section and WWR is the same as for the previous part.
Apply the window-head-height rule of thumb to rank the five massing schemes by their daylight availability, 1 through 5, with 1
having the highest percentage of daylight availability and 5 having the lowest.

Do show in detail how the daylight availability is calculated for each option.
