 There are five drive assignment policies that determine physical drive ownership in a HA pair
 Bay assignment: entry FAS systems
 Used by entry AFF systems running ONTAP 9.3 or earlier
 Stack assignment: mid or high-range FAS systems
 Shelf assignment: mid or high-range FAS systems
 Split-shelf assignment: AFF systems
 Support added for entry AFF systems with ONTAP 9.4 or later

12Gb SAS-3 Requirements
Overview
 ONTAP 9.x is required for 12Gb SAS-3 attachment

 ONTAP 8.x is not supported
 Speed transitions are not permitted between shelves in a 12Gb stack

 12Gb or 6Gb homogenous stacks must be cabled into separate stacks
 12Gb entry platforms support both 12Gb and 6Gb speeds

 Shelf speeds in the external stack must be homogenous
12Gb SAS-3 Recommendations
Best practices
 Provision SAS-3 native homogeneous configurations

 Ideal to provision native 12Gb SAS-3 shelves for all add-on storage within the HA pair
 For best performance, provision SAS-3 storage in homogenous stacks within the HA pair
 Separate 12Gb and 6Gb stacks are permitted within an HA pair, but it is best not to mix speeds within the stack
 12Gb entry platforms support both 12Gb and 6Gb
 Shelf speeds in the external stack must be homogenous
 Quad Path cabling recommended for large block, 64k or larger, sequential read workloads
 Multipath HA sufficient for other workloads

 Upgrading to IOM12 modules enables interoperability with SAS-3 shelves at 12Gb
 Storage stack will operate at 12Gb, but shelf backplanes will limit individual shelf performance to 6Gb
 12Gb drives are not required
12Gb SAS-3 Stack Mixing Rules
Maximum stack depth and drive types
 HDD shelves support a maximum stack depth of (10) shelves

 SSD shelves support a maximum stack depth of (4) shelves
 FAS2600, FAS2700, AFF A200, & AFF A220 support a maximum of (6) SSD-only shelves
 Up to 6 shelves for hybrid or mixed storage (SSD+HDD), are supported in same stack
 Drives of the same type (e.g. NL-SAS) but different capacity can be mixed in the same shelf
 Not recommended to provision in same RAID group
 Drives of different types (e.g. NL-SAS and SAS 10k) can be mixed in the same stack
 Cannot be mixed within the same RAID group or aggregate
6Gb SAS-3 Stack Mixing Rules

 IOM12 shelf support

 New controllers: FAS2700, FAS2600, FAS8200, FAS9000, AFF A200, AFF A300, AFF A700, and AFF A700s
 Support mix of IOM12 shelves in the same stack in ONTAP 9.1 or later
 Legacy controllers: FAS2200, FAS2500, FAS3200, FAS6200, FAS8000, and AFF8000
 Support mix of IOM12 shelves in the same stack running ONTAP 9.0 or later
 IOM3 and IOM6 shelf support

 New controllers support mix of IOM6 shelves in the same stack in ONTAP 9.1 or later
 IOM3 are not supported
 Legacy controllers support mix of IOM12 based shelves in the same stack running ONTAP 9.0 or later
 Stacks with 3Gb and 6Gb shelves will negotiate to the lowest common speed
Alternate Control Path
Overview
 12Gb shelves support in-band ACP (IBACP) with 12Gb SAS-3 cabling
 IBACP is also supported on legacy controllers (9.0+) and new controllers in (9.1+)
 6Gb shelves support both IBACP & out-of-band ACP (OOBACP)

 Requires separate Ethernet cabling
 OOBACP offered for legacy in 9.1, 9.0 and earlier
 IBACP requires shelf firmware 2.09 or later; See KB InBand ACP setup
 Legacy systems with existing IOM6, require OOBACP to be setup before updating shelf firmware and enabling IBACP
 New controllers must have the shelf firmware for IOM6 updated to 2.09 prior to attaching storage
 3Gb shelves support only OOBACP

 New controllers do not support IOM3 as a dedicated ACP port is not present
 Supported with legacy systems in 9.1 and earlier

Best Practices for SSDs:

 Provision additional stacks before increasing stack depth whenever possible to minimize latency
Example: In an HA pair with two 2 SSD-only shelves, Option 1 is recommended

 Option 2: 1 larger stack of 2 shelves

 5-year window from first purchase observed for spare replacement entitlements
 All legacy platforms running 9.0 or 9.1, or new 12G controllers on 9.1, are supported
 ONTAP 8.x is not supported
 Cabling rules follow same guidelines as native SAS-3 - DS212C & DS224C

Cooling Architecture
 PSU blowers provide cooling for power supplies, shelf modules, and drives
 Air flows in through disks, then splits between shelf modules and power supplies
 Fan speed regulated by Storage Enclosure Services (SES)
 SES forces higher or lower fan speeds to provide adequate cooling
 ONTAP monitors temperature sensors, power supplies, and fan speeds via SES
 One failed fan allowed per storage enclosure

 Storage enclosure will run indefinitely with one failed PSU
 Blowers continue to operate even if PSU fails
 2-minute shutdown rule applies during PSU removal and replacement
 ONTAP® initiates the shutdown
Power Architecture
 Number of power supplies (PSU) is dependent on storage enclosure

 DS212C: Two PSUs present
 Two blowers per PSU
 Two blowers per PSU
 Blowers are present in a separate field-replaceable unit (FRU)
 4 blowers per FRU
 One failed power supply allowed per storage enclosure

 Shelf will run indefinitely with single failed PSU
 Blowers are powered by the backplane and will continue to run if PSU fails
