Activity 1 : Long shower

Long Shower Is Taken 🚿

Mr Affandi Bin Daud’s family requires a lot of water mostly because of long shower is
took as his family consist many members, the water usage is high.
Way To Conserve Water
To reduce the water usage, the duration of shower per person should be reduced.
Installing a water-saving shower head will conserve more water.
Activity 2 : Gardening

Gardening 👩🏻‍🌾
Mr.Affandi’s wife loves gardening. She uses approximately 2000 litre of water as she
uses a host to water the plants. This leads to a lot of water wastage.
Way to conserve water
Mr.Affandi’s wife can collect rainwater and use it to water the plants. This is because
rain water is a natural source of water that is renewable.
Activity 3 : Toilet flushing

Toilet Flushing 🚽
Toilet flushing is the main water wastage in Mr Affandi’s family. As their toilet is an
older style toilet, it uses up 12 litre water per flush.
Way to conserve water
Mr Affandi can upgrade their toilet into a latest style toilet. Installing a low-flow toilet is
also a good way as it will save hundreds of gallons of water annually.
Family : Mrs Ng Chueh Yuen
Activity 1 : Leaky Pipe

Leaky Pipe
Most of the water used by Madam Chueh Yuen family is leaky pipe.It is a serious
problem as leaky pipes account for up to a 65% loss of water annually .
Way To Conserve water
She should fix the pipe immediately. Next, she should inspect pipes regularly and have
leaks fixed promptly.
Activity 2 : Washing the car

Washing the car 🚘

Madam Chueh Yuen’s husband uses a hose to wash the car which uses up gallons of
water. He also always leaves the hose running, which ends up wasting almost 150
gallons of water.
Way to conserve water
Madam Chueh Yuen’s husband can use a simple bucket filled with water and sponge
to scrub the car which will clean his car without any excessive amount of water
wastage.
Activity 3 : Washing fruits and vegetables

Washing fruits and vegetables 🍎🥦

Madam Chueh Yuen usfilled es a lot of water in the kitchen. She mostly uses a lot of
water for washing fruits and vegetables as she leaves the water running while washing.
Way to conserve water
Madam Chueh Yuen can use a bowl filled water to wash the fruits and vegetables.
After that, she can collect that water and use it to water potted plants.
Family - Madam Yap Siew Lee

It is an unrefusable to say that Madam Yap Siew Lee’s family has done a good job in
conserving water and they should be the quintessential for other families. However, most
water used by Yap’s family is for washing dishes. So, using a dishwasher to clean dirty
dishes is a good solution as it uses up to 30% less water. Other than that, always wait until
the dishwasher is full before running helps saving water too.
Activities that uses a lot of water (School)
Food preparation

❏ A lot of water is needed to prepare food for the whole canteen.

❏ For example, 1kg of potatoes uses 287 litres of water.
Methods to conserve water in food preparation

STEAMING

Steaming food preserves a generous amount of water compared to boiling, typically using
more than 50 percent less water while still serving as a healthy method of preparing a
meal

REUSE THE WATER

Save that water you used to wash the vegetables (or boil your pasta) and use it to hydrate
your garden and houseplants. (Strain it to remove any floating food bits that might rot or
attract rodents.)
Activities that uses a lot of water (Home)
1. Washing the car
❏ A home car wash can go through 80 to 140 gallons (300 to 530 litres)
of water.
❏ Wash at one of its garages will take about 30 to 45 gallons ( 115 to
170 litres)
Methods to conserve water in the bathroom
● Turn off tap while brushing teeth
● Take shorter baths
● Turn off tap while applying soap
● Do not wash tissue paper or waste into the toilet
Incident in Sungai Kim Kim
The 2019 Kim Kim River toxic pollution is a water pollution incident that
occurred on 7 March 2019 caused by illegal chemical waste dumping at the Kim
Kim River in Pasir Gudang of Johor in Malaysia.

Impacts :
❏ released toxic fumes
❏ affecting 6,000 people
❏ hospitalising 2,775
❏ 110 schools were subsequently closed along the river
Ways to prevent water pollution
❏ DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil, or grease
down the sink. Keep a “fat jar” under the sink to collect the fat and
discard in the solid waste when full.

❏ Use the minimum amount of detergent and bleach when you are washing
clothes or dishes. Use only phosphate free soaps and detergents.
Ways to Conserve Water For a Sustainable Living

1. Turn off the tap when it’s not in use

Keeping the water running while brushing your teeth or shaving,
wastes about 4-5 gallons of water on average. That’s roughly
what a family in Africa uses in an entire day. Instead, you could
plug the sink while shaving and turn the faucet off until it’s time
to wash.
2. Run your dishwasher and laundry only when it is full
Your dishwasher and washing machine can each use a whopping
10-15 gallons of water per cycle. For laundry machines, an older
agitator model uses up to 40 gallons of water, and a front-loader
uses about 7 gallons. So you will get better value for your money
and save water by doing fewer, fuller loads.
3. Fix plumbing leaks
If you’ve done everything, but your water bills are still high,
leaky plumbing could be the problem. Keep a close eye on
your utility bills. And get your plumbing checked and fixed to
reduce water wastage.
4. Use drip irrigation to water your plants
Garden hoses and sprinklers can overwater your plants. Much
of this water could also be lost through evaporation and runoff.
So if you have a small garden or few plants, try drip irrigation.
That way, your plants will have enough water consistently.
5. Cut those long showers short
Better yet, take five minute showers instead of baths. A full
bathtub requires up to 70 gallons of water. If you keep your
shower under five minutes long, you'll save up to 1,000 gallons a
month.
Problems that we may face in the future
1.1 billion people worldwide will lack access to water, and a total of 2.7 billion will find water scarce for at
least one month of the year. Inadequate sanitation is also a problem for 2.4 billion people will be exposed to
diseases, such as cholera and typhoid fever, and other water-borne illnesses. People, mostly children will die
every minute from diarrheal diseases alone.

Many of the water systems that keep ecosystems thriving and feed a growing human population will
become stressed. Rivers, lakes and aquifers will dry up or become too polluted to be used. More than half
the world’s wetlands will disappear. Agriculture consumes more water than any other source and wastes
much of that through inefficiencies. Climate change is altering patterns of weather and water around the
world, will cause shortages and droughts in some areas and floods in others.

At the current consumption rate, this situation will only get worse. By 2025, two-thirds of the world’s
population may face water shortages and ecosystems around the world will suffer even more.
