Berta Isabel Cáceres Flores
was born the 4 of March of the 1971
She was the daughter of Austra Bertha, who was a midwife, nurse and mayor,
who gave shelter to many refugees from El Salvador during the civil war in that
country. He also submitted the motion for Honduras to sign ILO Convention 169
on indigenous and tribal peoples, which was signed in 1995. He also prevented
the installation of a battalion in La Esperanza to avoid militarization, since the
military often harass indigenous peoples and women.
During her childhood and adolescence, Berta Cáceres was able to see and join
the struggles of her people. One of his brothers was shot and persecuted, his
other brother was kidnapped and tortured for six months. His mother was
watched for twelve years and was kidnapped in 1992 by a colonel who
graduated from the School of the Americas, who was later promoted.
As part of his people, he participated in many of their rites and traditions,
among them, the composure to the water.
Since the coup d'état of 2009, a large number of mega-projects destructive to
the environment have been started in Honduras, which entail the displacement
of indigenous communities and the privatization of rivers and territories, with
almost 30% of the national territory being allocated to mining concessions .14
According to COPINH denounces, in 2010 the National Congress “granted dozens
of river concessions throughout Honduras.” 12 Among these, it gave the
Gualcarque river to the DESA company for twenty years, 12 “a sacred river for
the Lenca people and an important source of water and food ”.15

In 2006, a group of indigenous Lenca from the indigenous region of Río Blanco,
note 1 16 came to COPINH for help after having witnessed the arrival of
machinery and construction material in their area.14 The project was about of a
commercial alliance to build four hydroelectric dams on the Gualcarque River.
The actors involved were the Chinese company Sinohydro (the largest dam
construction company in the world),
According to the NGO Global Witness, Honduras is the most dangerous country in the
world for environmental activism, with a total of twelve environmental activists
killed in 2014 and more than 120 people killed since 2010 for opposing dam
projects.28

Berta Cáceres had for years denounced harassment, serious threats of death and
violence against her and her family, and against members of COPINH. For this reason,
he had precautionary measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
(IACHR) since 2009, although according to his mother, in practice he did not receive
protection from the State due to pressure from the authorities that defend mining
and hydroelectric companies. Around midnight between March 2 and 3, 2016, Berta
Cáceres was at her home in La Esperanza, where the Mexican environmentalist
Gustavo Castro Soto, a member of Friends of the Earth, was also; When the killers
broke open the doors.
