THE LIMIT OF A

FUNCTION AT C
VERSUS THE VALUE
OF THE FUNCTION
AT C
■ What can you say about the video?
■ What is the video all about?
Learning Objectives

■ Using correct notation, describe the limit of a function.

■ The learners shall be able to formulate and solve accurately real-life problems involving
continuity of functions.
■ Distinguish between lim f(x) and f(c)
x→c
LIMIT

 Limits allow us to describe how the outputs of a function (usually the y or f(x) values)
behave as the inputs (x values) approach a particular value.
 The limit of a function, f(x) as x approaches c is L, where c is constant and L is a unique
real value. In symbols, it is usually written as
FUNCTION AT C VERSUS THE
VALUE OF THE FUNCTION AT C
■ limit of a given function at c -determined through examining its table of values or
graph.
■ value of the function at c -substituting the value of c in the function.
Example 1.
Compare the lim𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑓(1) if 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 3.
x→1
Example 2.
Compare the lim 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑓(−2) if
x→-2
Application
Compare the lim f(x) and f(c).
x→c
(𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 4; 𝑐 = 2
 x
f(x) x f(x)
1.8 9.4 2.3 10.9
1.9 9.7 2.15 10.45
1.997 9.991 2.001 10.003
1.99998 9.99994 2.000001 10.000003
Therefore, the lim 3x+4=10
x→2
𝑓(2) = 3(2) + 4
=6+4
𝑓(2) = 10

The lim 3x+4=10 is equal to f(2)

x→2
Evaluation
Directions:Complete the given table by writing either the
lim
x→c
𝑓(𝑥) or 𝑓(𝑐). Just the answer only. Pass it to me after 10 mins
in messenger.

lim 𝑓(𝑥)
x→c
f(c)
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 2; 𝑐 = 0 -2
𝑓(𝑥) = (3𝑥 − 4) 2 ; 𝑐 = −1 49
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 1 /x ; 𝑐 = 1 2
𝑓(𝑥) = √3𝑥 − 5 ; 𝑐 = 2 ±1
Assignment
Directions: List the differences of a limit of a function at c and the
value of the function at c by considering the following criteria. Write a
brief description. Write it in a 1 half sheet of paper. Pass it at 12 pm
tomorrow through messenger.
