TOPIC length

CONTENT Compare the unit of measurement in length.

GOAL The student will measure the length of a given object by the use of
measuring tool.
OBJECTIVE At the end of the lesson, student should be able to:
-name the common standard units for measuring length (centimeter and
meter).

-differentiate the two different types of measurement in length.

-estimate and measure length using meter (m) or centimeter (cm).

MATERIALS Tape measure, meter stick, paper clip, blackboard eraser, crayon, sharpener
and ruler
INTRODUCTION List several items in the classroom (the length of the classroom,
width of the chalkboard, book, etc.). Ask students how they would go about
measuring these items. Have student discuss this in their teams. Then have
students make circle map in their math journals for measurement. Have
student create a circle map showing what they already know about
measurement. Share some of their information in the class.
ELICIT Ask student to name common standard units for measuring length.

ENGAGE After naming the 2 common standard units for measuring lengths, which are
meter (m), and centimeter (cm), I will let the student measure the length of
their mathematics book using different objects.

EXPLORE Object to be used in measuring:

*paper clip
*blackboard eraser
*crayon
*sharpener
Length of the book using objects:
*there are 13 paper clips
*there are 2 ½ blackboard erasers
*there are 3 crayons
*there are 8 sharpeners
EXPLAIN The common standard units for measuring lengths are the centimeter(cm)
and meter(m).
Centimeter is used to measure the length of SHORT objects
ELABORATE Let us practice what we learned.
Activity 1. Name the unit of measure to be used in measuring length of the
following objects. Write cm for centimeter and m for meter.
1. Cellphone
2. Door
3. Tv remote
4. Book
5. House
8we must remember that when measuring short objects we use centimeter
and when we measure longer objects we use meter.
EXTEND Activity 2 :
Get the length of the given object using Tape measure, meter stick and ruler.
Use the appropriate measuring tool.

EVALUATE Quiz:
Read and analyze each word problem. Write your answer in a one whole
sheet of paper.
1. The flagpole is 5 m high. The electric post is 600 cm. Which is taller?
2. Sam used 4 m ribbon for her project and 300 cm ribbon for gift-
wrapping. Which is the longer ribbon?
3. In a 10-second running contest, Gerald covered a distance of 40
meters; kai covered 3800 centimeters, while Henry covered 4500
centimeters. Who won in the contest?
