1. Non standard units


These units are used to measure the height or length of an object using different tools.
They are different for each person.
Examples:​ ​hand span, cubit, foot span etc.

2. Standard units
These units are used to measure the height or length of an object using a standard tool.
They do not change based on the person using it.
Examples:​ ​Standard units are centimetre (cm), metre (m) , kilometre (km)

Standard units

centimetre metre kilometre

● cm ------ Centimetre
● m ------ Meter
● km ------ Kilometer
1 metre = 100 cm
1 km = 1000 m
Note:
1. Smaller objects are measured in centimetres.
2. Longer heights / lengths are measured in metres.
3. Distances are measured in kilometers.

Q1. How do you measure the length of an object that does not have a straight line?
Example :

Answer : ​We can use a non - standard tool such as a string or thread and ruler (to measure
the string / thread )

Q2. Write the most appropriate unit (cm, m, km) to measure the given objects.

1. Length of a board pin = ​cm


2. Width of a pencil box =​ cm
3. Depth of the well = ​ m
4. Distance from Chennai to Hyderabad = ​km
5. Length of a crayon = ​cm
6. Distance from India to U.S.A = ​km
7. Width of a notebook is about 10 = ​cm

Q3. Measure the length of the following pencils in centimeters

Q4. The distance from school to park is 3 km. The distance from school to library is 2
km. Which is nearer to school?

Answer : The distance from school to park = 3 km


The distance from school to library = 2 km
On comparing both the distances, the library is nearer to school.
