A. pelvic kidney
B & C: Horseshoe shaped kidney
Horseshoe –shaped kidneys
• The ascent of a kidney may be halted by the bifurcation formed by umbilical arteries
leading to pelvic position of kidney
• The lower poles of the kidneys may be fused forming horseshoe-shaped kidney which
lies lower than normal position due to the ascent being halted by inferior mesenteric
artery
Polycystic Kidney Disease
Cystic Kidney Disease
• In autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, diagnosed at birth or in utero
by ultrasonography/ USG, both kidneys contain many hundreds of small cysts
which result in renal insufficiency
• Death of the infant usually occurs shortly after birth; however, an increasing
number of these infants are surviving because of postnatal dialysis and kidney
transplantation.
Multicystic Dysplastic Kidney Disease
• Dysmorphology during development of the renal system
• The outcome for children with multicystic dysplastic kidney disease is generally good
because the disease is unilateral in 75% of the cases
• In multicystic dysplastic kidney disease, fewer cysts are seen than in autosomal recessive
polycystic kidney disease and they range in size from a few millimeters to many
centimeters in the same kidney
• For many years it was thought that the cysts were the result of failure of the metanephric
diverticulum derivatives to join the tubules derived from the metanephrogenic blastemal
• It is now believed that the cystic structures are wide dilations of parts of the otherwise
continuous nephrons, particularly the nephron loops
Duplication of Ureters
Development of Urinary Bladder
Absorption of part of mesonephric duct into the wall of urinary bladder
Extrophy of Bladder
• Failed reinforcement of the
cloacal membrane by the
underlying mesoderm
Urachal fistula, cyst or sinus
Horse shoe shaped kidney
Crossed Renal Ectopia
