Life of Pi

is a 2012 adventure drama film based on Yann Martel’s

2001 novel of the same name. Directed by Ang Lee, and written by
David Magee, the film stars Suraj Sharma, Irfan Khan, Rafe Spall,
Tabu, Adil Hussain, and Gerard Depardieu. The storyline revolves
around an Indian man named "Pi" Patel, telling a novelist about
his life story, and how at 16 he survives a shipwreck and is adrift in
the Pacific Ocean on a lifeboat with a Bengal Tiger. The film began
development shortly after the release of the book, and would see
directors M. Night Shyamalan, Alfonso Cuaron and Jean-Pierre
Jeunet involved at various stages before the hiring of Lee. Filming
was split between India, Taiwan and Montreal in 2011, with
Rhythm and Hues Studios (R&H) handling the visual effects work.
The film had its worldwide premiere as the opening film of the 50th
New York Film Festival at both the Walter Reade Theater and Alice
Tully Hall in New York City on September 28, 2012.
Be Greatful
• Despite those feelings we all have at
some point in our lives that nothing is
good and that nothing will ever be
good again there is always something
to be greatful for.
• Just like Pi was greatful that he
survived the storm and he was also
greatful that he had his friend (tiger)
with him.
Don’t Lose Hope.
• Pi saw a boat and sent SOS signals
but the boat did not see it
• Pi did not lose hope when the
boat failed to see his signals
• He kept moving whether it’s a
black sea or the dark clouds or the
ominous waves or hungry
predator as company
• Similarly for an entrepreneur, it’s
important to remember, that the
darkest days are not going to last.
Don’t Give Up
• Life of Pi is a story of perseverance
• A story of not giving up even in tough
situations
• Pi did not give up even when he
found it almost impossible to survive
in a boat with a tiger in middle of
ocean
• Similarly for an entrepreneur, it’s
important to not give up on dreams
and life
Learn to Co-Exist

• Mr.Parker (tiger) is both a co-

founder and a competitor of Pi in his
entrepreneurial journey.
• An entrepreneur needs to co-exist
with both co-founders and with
competition in the market
Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket

• When Pi found Richard Parker on

the life boat, he got scared and
threw all the supplies from the
lifeboat to the raft which later fell
in water.
• While starting up, resources are
few and it’s important to save
those.
• It’s good to have one secure base
and address the market.
Planning is Important
• Pi found a handbook on the boat,
he read it, planned and executed
accordingly which helped him to
survive
• Similarly your business plan is the
handbook
• Keep referring to it when you’re in
doubt and monitor progress as you
go.
Branding is the First Step Towards Success

• Pi Patel was born with the name Piscina

Molitor Patel, of which everyone started
making fun.
• He expressed the value of Pi in several
hundred decimals to tell thathis name was
derived from Greek letter
• He worked hard on rebranding exercise
• So, if one have to work on creating a new
brand name or changing existing brand
name, work on telling a good story which
captures imagination of audience.
• The story makes the brand name sick
Stay Focused

• It’s difficult to follow different paths at

the same time, as many of them are
conflicting in nature and often create
confusion and make it difficult to stay
focused
• At times, lead to wastage of crucial
resources
• Pi’s father explained him this when he
wanted to follow all religions.
Perspective Changes Everything

• How we choose to see a situation is the

situation
• Whether its good or bad is always upto
us.
• We always have power to instantly
change our perspective and thus
change the outcome of any
circumstance.
• Pi saw a companion in the tiger rather
than getting scared of him.
