PROCESS OF IN-SITU
BIOREMEDIATION
BIOVENTING
(TREATMENT OF UNSATURATED SOIL)

•Only biotechnological in situ technology available

for treating unsaturated soil.
• One of the methods used in biostimulation .
•Stimulation of natural in situ biodegradation of
pollutants in the soil by providing air to existing soil
MOs.
•It uses low pressure air an is generally focused on
vadose, or unsaturated zone of the soil.
Various native aerobic microbes that grow in soil
with ability to degrade different type of pollutants.
Example-
1.Pseudomonas putida
2.Dechloromonas aromatica
3.Deinococcus radiodurans
4.Methylibium petroleiphilum

They use hydrocarbon as a source of carbon

and energy.
•They might not have proper and optimal condition
to survive and grow, especially due to low aeration
in the soil.

•By implementing bioventing, low air flow rates

provide enough oxygen to sustain microbial activity.

•Enhances biodegrading activity of these bacteria.

What kind of pollutants that bacteria are able to
biodegrade?

•Petrochemical compounds
such as gasoline, fuel
oil and butimen.

•Constituents of these compounds

are measured together as total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH).
•BTEX (benzene, toulene, ethylbenzene, xylene).
BTEX are known as volatile organic compounds
(VOCs).
Steps involved in Bioventing-:
1.An initial screening of bioventing
effectiveness(type of soil- clay or silt)
2.A detailed evaluation of bioventing effectiveness
(soil pH, moisture content, soil temperature,
depth to groundwater >3 feet).
3.Evaluation of the bioventing system design.

A typical bioventing system is simple we need

a.) Blower/ compressor
b.)Soil gas monitoring well

There are two methods of bioventing

1.Injection
2.Extraction
1.Injection
•Simpler and less expensive compared to extraction.

•Favored at
sites with
low-permeability
soils with
contaminants
of low vapor
pressure
located deeply
in the soil.
Injection (cont’d)
•Safer when contamination is distant from property
boundaries.

•Injected air tends to push contaminated vapors

outwards from their initial location.

•Increases biodegrading efficiency as contaminants

come in contact with more microbes.
2. Extraction
•Complex and more expensive compared to
injection.
•Favored at sites
where there is no
way to avoid
pushing
hazardous vapors
into property
boundaries.
•Cause water
table to rise slightly,
decreasing the volume of contaminated soil.
