Perforating Basis of Design
• Design Goals is to Maximize connectivity to the reservoir
by :
– penetrating beyond any damaged zone around the
wellbore  as big as possible charges
– as low as possible damage  caused by perforation
process

• Well information required to design a perforation type :

– Temperature
– Casing/Tubing size
– well deviation
– Reservoir type (carbonate/sand/fracture basement,
etc)
– Reservoir rock strength

Condition of Perforation
• Underbalance Perforation (Hydrostatic Pressure < Formation Pressure)
– Main objective : Clean the perforation tunnel when
formation pressure still high enough to expel the
compacted material as the result of perforation
– Lowside :
• Wireline thru tubing perforation
– Risk of getting high pressure exposure on surface when perforating the
reservoir
– Charges size is small  shallow penetration
• TCP
– Longer operation time
– More expensive
– Not possible to get clear End Of Tubing, unless drop the TCP string as fish
• Overbalance Perforation (Hydrostatic Pressure > Formation Pressure)
– Main objective : Easy to run, fast and not expensive
– Lowside : Potentially increase skin damage due to creating
compacted zone along perforation tunnel.

Advance Perforation System
(STIM Gun)

Designed to dynamically clean up and stimulate the near-

wellbore area
• Consist of :
– Perforating gun
– special propellant sleeve surrounding
the gun
• Application :
– Wells with extensive near wellbore
damage
– Wells with close oil or water contact,
where hydraulic fracturing is not
possible.
– Pre-stimulation perforation break-
down to reduce tortuosity and
increase injectivity.
– Tubing Conveyed or Wireline
Conveyed perforating applications
