STEINER’S ACCEPTABLE
COMPROMISE
STEINER’S ACCEPTABLE COMPROMISES

• Indicates how it is possible to adjust the position of the

upper and lower incisors to the size of the ANB angle
and at the same time maintain a normal overjet and
overbite
• Find the position of the incisors that best compensates a
basal sagittal discrepancy
POSITION OF THE TEETH
 Compensates the basal discrepancies
 Inadequate compensation MALOCCLUSION
 Most important compensation variation in upper and lower
incisor inclination which may mask a sagittal discrepancy
 Position of incisors influence position of the lips
POSITION OF TEETH
• Steiner used the ANB angle as expression for sagittal relation
between the jaws
• Position of the U1 and L1 should vary as ANB varies
STEINER ACCEPTABLE COMPROMISES

A 1 degree change in the ANB angle gives a change of 1mm and 1

degree in U1-NA and 0.25 mm and 1 degree for L1-NB

HOLDAWAYS ANALYSIS
FACIAL ANGLE AND UPPERLIP CURVATURE

Facial angle- intersection of FH plane with line

joining N’ to Pog’

Avg value- 90 - 92 degrees

Þprotrusive/retrusive lower jaw

UPPER LIP CURVATURE

Reference line- tangent from FH plane to tip of
upper lip.
Depth of upper lip sulcus is measured.
Avg value- 1.5 - 4 mm
H-LINE ANGLE AND SKELETAL CONVEXITY AT
POINT A
H-line angle formed between H-line and line
joining N’ to Pog’
Avg value- 7-15 degrees

Measures upper lip prominence or

retrognathism of the soft tissue chin

Skeletal convexity at point A is measured

from N-Pog line to point A
Avg value- +2 to -2mm
Assess facial skeletal convexity relating to
lip position
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN H-LINE AND
SKELETAL CONVEXITY AT POINT A
NOSE TIP TO H-LINE AND UPPER SULCUS
DEPTH
NOSE TIP TO H-LINE
Avg value- 12mm maximum
=> Contributes to total picture of facial balance

UPPER SULCUS DEPTH

Measured from sub-spinale to H-line
Avg value- 5mm
< 3mm => short/thin lips
> 7mm => longer/thick lips
UPPER LIP THICKNESS AND UPPER LIP STRAIN

Upper lip thickness is measured horizontally from a

point 2mm below point A to outer border of upper lip.
Avg value- 15mm
Upper lip strain is measured from vermillion border of
the lip to labial surface of the maxillary central incisor.
This measurement should be approximately same as the
upper lip thickness (within 1mm).
If upper lip thickness is greater than the upper lip strain
then it indicates there is strain in the upper lip.
LOWER SULCUS DEPTH AND SOFT TISSUE CHIN
THICKNESS

Lower sulcus depth is measured from the deepest point

in the curvature between the lower lip and the chin and
the H-line
Avg value- 5mm
Soft tissue thickness is measured from hard tissue
Pogonion to soft tissue pogonion
Avg value- 10-12mm
In cases with increased chin thickness, the lower incisors
may be permitted to remain in a more prominent
position, allowing for facial harmony
According to Holdaway a perfect profile should have
 ANB- 2 degrees
 H-line angle- 7-8 degrees
 Lower lip should touch the H-line
 H-line should bisect S curve between pronasale and
subnasale
 Tip of the nose- should be 9mm anterior to the H-line
 There should be no lip strain factor
(Upper lip strain = Upper lip thickness)
