BASICS OF E-LEARNING
INTRODUCTION

 E- learning has emerged as a new tool in the field of


education and can be used to enhance and support
traditional learning system.
 It has become an integral part of the learning system.
 In order to present knowledge to students, the learning
process requires certain tools and techniques which help
them to attain their goals.
 With the advent of the internet in the 1990s , e-learning
has become an important part of learning. Most
universities have adopted e-learning in its curriculum.
INTRODUCTION
 There are certain terms which are frequently used in place of e-learning ;
1. Online Learning/Education
2. Distance Education/Learning
3. Technology –Based Training
4. Web-Based Learning
Definition:-
According to EU ( European Commission) :
“ E-Learning is the use of new multimedia technologies and the internet to improve the
quality of learning by facilitating access to resources and services as well as remote exchange and
collaboration”.
CHARACTERISTICS OF E-LEARNING

 3. Technology Enhanced Learning.
 4. Online Learning.
 5. Not Synonymous to Audio Visual and Multimedia

MODES/TYPES OF E-LEARNING
1. Synchronous
2. Asynchronous

3. Synchronous E-Learning:-
In this , all students and their instructor are logged in simultaneously and communicate
directly to each other virtually.

In this type e-learning all the students must be collected in the classroom at same time for the
class to start.
Synchronous E-learning activity consists of live web-camera, chat rooms, application sharing and
whiteboard session.
MODES/TYPES OF E-LEARNING
2. Asynchronous E-Learning:-
 In this , participants do not communicate simultaneously.
 Here, the learning content is served from a web server and
supplied to the learner’s workstation according to their needs.
 Learner can take courses at own pace.
 Courseware is available to learners every time i.e. 24x7.
 Example:- taking a self paced coarse and posting messages to
group which are collected for discussion.
ADVANTAGES OF E- LEARNING
1. Flexibility, Convenience and Accessibility.
i. Fast and simple accessibility anytime, anywhere.
ii. The learner gets a wide variety of choice of learning
materials from the numerous courses offered online.
iii. Simpler distribution of course material through e-
learning.
iv. Instant feedback on submission of online homework,
quiz and tests.
v. Simple to access different resources.
vi. Easily manageable for a large group of students.
vii. It s available in various styles and it is facilitated
through various activities.
ADVANTAGES OF E- LEARNING
2. Saves time:
I. Saves students time as learning reduces their travelling time.
II. The students can schedule his/her classes as per his/her time-table.
III. This leads to fast learning as students can skip sections which already understand and go to
new areas of study.

V. Interaction between students and instructors is better as compared to large lecture courses.
LIMITATIONS OF E-LEARNING
 1. There is a technology infrastructure requirement which might not be present in some
countries.
 2. it requires a high initial set-up cost as the greater part of cost incurred is the start-up cost.
 3. lack of social interaction.
 4. Cheating is unavoidable.
 5. Requires self motivation and proper time management skills.
 6. Work labs have become difficult to stimulate in a virtual classroom.
DISTANCE LEARNING & ONLINE UNIVERSITIES
Distance Learning-
 Also known as distance education.
 It is an education system where educators and learners are located at
different places .
 Educators can provide flexible learning & teaching facilities without
compromising quality consideration.
 Distance learning can be defined as a self-course study which is also
known as correspondence course.
 In this , study material and learning resources provided to students
through email according to the schedule of the course.
 This is a process to create experience of education equally qualitative
for the learners to suit their necessities outside the classroom.
 I has broadly used in universities and learning organization around the
world wherein major universities are offering cources through this
medium.
Online / Virtual Universities:-
 These are university that provide high education through distance learning cources via
electronic media like internet.
 It provides a visual learning platform over which recorded lectures and resources are shared
for learning.
 The main objective of this is to deliver access to that part of people who are not able to
attend the college owing to distance or other issues.
ONLINE CORPORATE TRAINING

 Corporate training is provided through internet as well as corporate portals.


 Online training is the process of transferring knowledge via internet from anywhere
across the globe to the target audiences who wish to learn online, it can be either paid
or free.

ELECTRONIC BOOKS/ E-BOOKS

 An e-book is a book that is made available online


in a digital format .
 The e-book consists of text as well as images in a
readable format and can be easily displayed on
electronic devices.
 The books can be read on computers or on mobile
devices with help of special software.
 There are several ways using which the large
number of books can be read-
Dedicated Reader, Web Access, Web Downloads
and Smartphones, General Purpose Reader, Web
Server.

 Advantages:
1. Low update costs
2. Multimedia format
3. Searchable
4. No shipping costs
 Disadvantages:
1. No convenient to read.
2. Piracy .
