What is Droplet & Contact?
 Droplet and contact precautions are set in
place in order to prevent the spread of
germs and bacteria
 The spread happens due to human body
secretions such as:
 Mucus
 Saliva
 Breathe
 Germs travel by sneezing, coughing, or
simply just talking/breathing
 They can spread on surfaces, shaking
hands, human to human contact, and
through the air
Please, wash your hands!

sterilized, cleaned, or disinfected appropriately

hygiene
• Only essential travel as absolutely needed
Preventing across all BAD GOOD
ages groups!
For some precautions you made need to take separate or
different steps for various age groups. For example
supplying a newborn in Pediatrics with a mask will not
prove as helpful when providing an adult with one. The
same may be applicable for elderly or unconscious.
Droplet and contact precautions do not vary much for
separate ages, if the patient or client is able to wear
goggles and a mask that proves great. However as a
healthcare worker we must take the precautions to don
gloves, gown, haircap, mask, and shield. In some cases
you may need to double glove. Please ensure to teach
these donning methods to visitors, family, parents,
partners, etc.
How to teach your client about precautions.

Try saying to your client things like:

• Can you try wearing this mask for me?

• Could we go over proper hand washing for your protection?
• I’m going to place this hand sanitizer by your bed so you
can use, try to use it often
• We are doing this all to keep you and your loved ones
healthy
Your Responsibilities as a Nurse
