Language feature – The sentence structure with time expressions.

The time expression can be placed before or after the subject in a sentence, but it
must be before the verb(s) it modifies.

你今天上午忙吗?
Nǐ jīntiān shàngwǔ máng ma?

我五点半起床。
Wǒ wǔdiǎn bàn qǐchuáng.

他们下午三点上课。
Tāmen xiàwǔ sāndiǎn shàngkè.

你晚上几点洗澡?
Nǐ wǎnshang jǐdiǎn xǐzǎo?
Language feature – The Auxiliary Verb “ 想” (xiǎng, to want to)

“ 想” has several meanings. In this lesson it expresses the subject’s intention


or desire, it must be followed by a verb or a clause.
The negative form of “ 想 xiǎng” is “ 不想 bù xiǎng ”.

我想看电视。
Wǒ xiǎng kàn diànshì.

我不想起床 。
Wǒ bù xiǎng qǐchuáng.
Language feature – the time words “ 以前 yǐqián” and “ 以后 yǐhòu”.

The time words “ 以前 yǐqián” and “ 以后 yǐhòu” are placed after other time
phrases or action words to indicate before or after these times or actions.

锻炼身体以后 , 我洗澡。
Duànliàn shēntǐ yǐhòu, wǒ xǐzǎo.

下午五点以后 , 我们都不工作。
Xiàwǔ wǔdiǎn yǐhòu, wǒmen dōu bù gōngzuò.

吃晚饭以前,刘先生看电视吗?

Chī wǎnfàn yǐqián, Liú xiānshēng kàn diànshì ma?

中午以前,他们不想开会。

Language feature – Sentences with serial verb phrases: purpose

In a sentence, the subject may take two consecutive verbs or verb phrases. The
serial verb phrases introduced in this lesson, the second verb indicates the
purpose of the action of the first verb.

我去开会。
Wǒ qù kāihuì.

我去吃晚饭。
Wǒ qù chī wǎnfàn.

开会以后,我回家吃晚饭。
kāihuì yǐhòu, wǒ huíjiā chī wǎnfàn.

洗澡以前,我去锻炼身体。
Xǐzǎo yǐqián, wǒ qù duànliàn
shēntǐ.
Language feature – The affirmative/negative questions “Adjective 不 Adjective”
and “verb 不 verb”.

S+ma=? A or Not A= ?

Besides adding the particle “ 吗” to the end of a sentences to form question,


another way to form question is to repeat the adjective or verb in it’s affirmative
and negative form.

- 你忙不忙? Nǐ máng bù máng? 你忙吗? Ni3 mang2 ma?


+ 我很忙。 Wǒ hěn máng.

- 他们是不是学生? Tāmen shì bú shì xuéshēng?


+ 他们都是学生。 Tāmen dōu shì xuéshēng.

- 他去不去林老师家? Tā qù bú qù Lín lǎoshī jiā?


+ 他不去林老师家。 Tā bú qù Lín lǎoshī jiā.
Language feature – The particle “ 了 le”.

The particle “ 了 le” can be used after a verb to indicate realization or completion
of an action.

我哥哥七月订婚了。
Wǒ gēge qīyuè dìnghūn le.

我结婚了。
Wǒ jiéhūn le.

李先生离婚了。
Lǐ xiānsheng líhūn le.
