Language feature – The Auxiliary Verb “ 想” (xiǎng, to want to)
我想看电视。
Wǒ xiǎng kàn diànshì.

Wǒ bù xiǎng qǐchuáng.
Language feature – the time words “ 以前 yǐqián” and “ 以后 yǐhòu”.
The time words “ 以前 yǐqián” and “ 以后 yǐhòu” are placed after other time
phrases or action words to indicate before or after these times or actions.
锻炼身体以后 , 我洗澡。
Duànliàn shēntǐ yǐhòu, wǒ xǐzǎo.
下午五点以后 , 我们都不工作。
Xiàwǔ wǔdiǎn yǐhòu, wǒmen dōu bù gōngzuò.
吃晚饭以前,刘先生看电视吗?
中午以前,他们不想开会。
Zhōngwǔ yǐqián, tāmen bù xiǎng kāihuì.
Language feature – Sentences with serial verb phrases: purpose
In a sentence, the subject may take two consecutive verbs or verb phrases. The
serial verb phrases introduced in this lesson, the second verb indicates the
purpose of the action of the first verb.
我去开会。
Wǒ qù kāihuì.
我去吃晚饭。
Wǒ qù chī wǎnfàn.
开会以后,我回家吃晚饭。
kāihuì yǐhòu, wǒ huíjiā chī wǎnfàn.
洗澡以前,我去锻炼身体。
Xǐzǎo yǐqián, wǒ qù duànliàn
shēntǐ.
Language feature – The affirmative/negative questions “Adjective 不 Adjective”
and “verb 不 verb”.
S+ma=? A or Not A= ?
The particle “ 了 le” can be used after a verb to indicate realization or completion
of an action.
我哥哥七月订婚了。
Wǒ gēge qīyuè dìnghūn le.
我结婚了。
Wǒ jiéhūn le.
李先生离婚了。
