Introduction
 Definition & Symbols:
Dimensions define the size of a feature or its location relative to
other features or a frame of reference.

Advantages
Linear dimensions can be horizontal, vertical, or aligned.
They specify the distance between two points.

 Parallel and continued (or chain) dimensions are series of

consecutive dimensions that are based on a linear dimension.

Angular dimensions measure the angle between two lines.

Radial dimensions measure the radii and diameters of arcs

and circles.

Ordinate dimensioning is used to measure the

perpendicular distance from origin. Generally used in

Dimension Terminology:

03/20/22 18
Dimensioning Terms

 Dimension Lines: Drawn between extension lines,

contain the dimension value, and are terminated with
arrowheads.

 Leaders: Lines inclined 20° to 70° from horizontal. They

point to some feature on the drawings.

03/20/22 19
Dimensioning Terms

 Arrowheads: Placed on the ends of the dimension line.

Are drawn to a 3:1 ratio. May vary with the type of drafting.

Extension Lines: Extend from the feature being

dimensioned with a gap of about 2 mm.

03/20/22 20
Dimensioning Terms

 Size Dimensions:
Indicate the physical size of a feature.

03/20/22 21
Dimensioning Terms

 Location Dimensions:
Show the location of features relative to a datum.

03/20/22 22
Dimensioning Rules

1 Avoid placing dimensions on the part (inside of the view).

03/20/22 23
Dimensioning Rules

2. Avoid dimensioning to hidden features

03/20/22 24
Dimensioning Rules
3. Always place dimensions where the characteristic shape is
shown in the most descriptive view

03/20/22 25
Dimensioning Rules

4. Always dimension holes in their circular view with the Ø.

03/20/22 26
Dimensioning Rules
5. Dimension rounded corners and arc features as radii where
they appear in their rounded view.

03/20/22 27
Dimensioning Rules

6. If the same value is repeated many times, then use a

general note for the feature.
(ALL FILLETS AND ROUNDS ARE .125R)

03/20/22 28
Dimensioning Rules

7. Dimension cylinders in their rectangular view with a

diameter symbol….Ø.

03/20/22 29
Dimensioning Rules

8. Keep dimensions between views whenever possible .

03/20/22 30
Dimensioning Rules

9. Extension lines may cross each other and over other lines
on the part, but dimension lines should never be crossed.

03/20/22 31
Dimensioning Rules
10. The overall dimension should always be given. It should
be placed outside of smaller dimensions and be the farthest
from the part.

03/20/22 32
Dimensioning Rules

11. Do not duplicate dimensions

03/20/22 33
Dimensioning Rules

12. When all of the dimensions are expressed as inches. DO

NOT use inch marks ('') or the abbreviation (.in)

03/20/22 34
Dimensioning Rules

13. For drawings dimensioned in inches, values less than 1

inch should not be proceeded with a zero.

03/20/22 35
Dimensioning Rules

14. For metric dimensions less than 1 mm DO place a zero in

front of the decimal point.

03/20/22 36
Dimensioning Rules
15. For metric drawings, omit the use of the millimeter (mm)
notation following the numeral, as millimeters are the default
units.

03/20/22 37
Dimensioning Rules
16. Reference dimensions should be placed in parenthesis or
should include the abbreviation “REF”. Basic sizes (to be
tolerance) should be placed inside of a rectangular box

03/20/22 38
Dimensioning Rules

17. Extend leaders from the first or last word in a note. Point
them toward (but not touch) the center of the circular
features that they are specifying.

Dimensioning standards

ANSI: American National Standards Institute

ASME: American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

MIL-STD: Military Standards
ISO: International Standards Organization
