Shrinkage:

Shrinkage is the contraction in the dimension of the fabric due to usage. Cotton,
wool , silk and linen fabric are the most common fabric which shrink the most.
What is Anti-Shrink finish?

Anti-shrinking finish:
Anti-shrinking finishing refers to finishing clothes and the like for preventing shrinkage. The mechanical
method is an effective way to solve the shrinkage of the warp direction, which is to make the potential
shrinkage existing in the fabric and pre-retract it before it becomes a finished product.

Shrinkage of fabric.
OBJECTIVES OF ANTI-SHRINK FINISH

• Fabric smooth and free from undesirable shrinkage

• Reducing residual shrinkage. The process forces yarns closer
together and the fabric becomes thicker and heavier.
• Some of the process are:
1. Chlorine/Hercosett method,
2. Resin treatment
3. Chemical treatment
4. Compressive shrinkage heat setting
5. Sanforized finish
SANFORIZING PROCESS

Cotton fabric suffers from 2 main disadvantages of creasing and shrinking during subsequent washing. Creasing is
overcome by the resin finishing whereas the shrinking is prevented by a special finishing known as Sanforising. The
machine used for that purpose is known as Zero – Zero Pre Shrinking machine
• F = Fabric; S = Skyer; C = Clip expander; R = Rubber belt; P = Pressure roll; RB = Rubber belt cylinder; D = Dryer
EFFECT OF SANFORISING
CHLORINE/HERCOSETT METHOD

• Shrink proofing treatments are commonly applied to

wool.
• The treatments may be divided into two main
categories; being destructive and additive treatments.
1. Destructive treatments use selected chemicals,
e.g. chlorination, to soften and round off the scales on
the wool surface
2. Additive processes use polymers to coat and
mask the scales
Destructive treatments
• Chlorination
• Neutralization
• Any residual chlorine is destroyed with sodium sulphite,
followed by rinsing.
• Hercosett polymer
• Softener
