MY FINAL PROJECT

BY JOSHUA JACQUES
CONTEXT

FOCUS GROUP/ IDEA GENERATION FOCUS GROUP 2

 For the context I came up with ideas through a mind map then discussed  Although some of my group preferred the second
these idea within my focus group.
 I discussed two ideas in the first focus group:
idea I discussed in the first focus group I have
decided to go with my first idea
 The first was focused on one tyle of documentary, where I would have clips
playing in the background of a voice-over – giving the documentary a more  I am going to use clips relating to my topic and have
cinematic feel
them playing alongside the voice-over,
 The second I discussed with the group was filming the documentary as a set
of interviews, only including the faces of the person I would be interviewing complimenting the story that is being told, providing
 Believed the first idea would be more interesting, allowing me to use skills I the documentary with a cinematic element
have learnt throughout this course – would also allow me to protect the
identities of my interviewees as I will be looking at a sensitive topic (mental
health)

MY FINAL IDEA

MY IDEA AND WHY?

 For my final project I am going to produce a documentary on the  I believe that my production should be produced
effects that the pandemic had on mental health
because it will not only provide a factual
 I will be interviewing a professional on mental health – discussing the
understanding for mental health, but also it will give
increase in depression and anxiety on young adults post-pandemic
personal in-site into mental health disorders, and
 I will have voice overs describing the impact that the pandemic had on
their mental health alongside clips that convey the emotion being
how hard it is to live with them
discussed to the audience  The sensitivity and complexity of this topic will
 The idea for my production is going to be on anxiety and depression, I
allow me to take a greater concern when considering
wish I could have explored other disorders which is mentioned in my
restrictions as its hard to find people with less common disorders. the social and ethical implications that my
documentary may have
SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

- - Social issue – As my documentary focuses on mental health issues (namely anxiety and depression), and the implications that the
pandemic has had, it doesn’t mean that everyone that has mental health issues have the same struggles or experiences. My documentary could
create a social issue as some of my target audience would suffer with the mental health disorders I plan to look at, and they may take offense
or feel as though I am generalising the disorder. I will need to take care when approaching such sensitive topics.

The main focus of the production will be on the struggle of anxiety and depression where ill be showing in a cinematic way. Where I talk
about the pandemic will be something I will include in my production to show the drastic change it has caused and effected in peoples mental
health.
 At the beginning of my research when deciding on my age range for my
target audience I researched the ages that are most affected by mental health.
This graph shows that, despite figures showing that 18-44 experience high
rates of mental disorders, they are still the lowest age range to receive mental
health treatment. Therefore, I believe focusing my documentary on younger
adults will be beneficial, as the personal experiences I am going to include
would relate to some of my target audience and having the expert on mental
health issues in my documentary might encourage others struggling to seek
the treatment they need. Also, as the age range I will be focusing on is young
adults, it means that they will all most likely have someone in their life who
TARGET is struggling, whether that be a family member or friend, and therefore my
AUDIENCE documentary might provide them with insight on what others go through on
a day-to-day basis that they cannot understand on their own.
TEST RUNS

Have done some practice B rolls with my camera at home:

- To practice lighting, coloring and angles for when I shoot clips to include in my documentary that will need to fit
the emotion of the voice-over in my documentary
- also have practiced shooting different locations that might be good to use in my documentary like empty, spaced-
out areas
I have also started to interview possible participants in my documentary that have struggled with mental health
disorders and have discussed my topic with a mental health professional.
