Chapter-8
Mixtures
8.1 Compound and mixture
Compound
A substance in which atoms of two or more different elements
are bonded together.

Mixture
Something that contains two or more substances (elements or
compounds) that are not combined chemically.
Iron filings sulfur
• Metal - Non-metal
• Hard, coloured grey - Yellow
• Strong - Brittle
• Conduct heat and electricity - does not conduct heat or electricity
• Magnetic - Not magnetic
Mixing iron filings and sulfur
Making iron sulfide compound
Differences between mixture and compound
Compound Mixture
-substances are combined chemically -substances are mixed physically
-pure substances -impure substances
-the composition of the compound is -the composition of the mixture is
always constant/ fixed. variable
-they have definite boiling and -they have no definite boiling and
melting point melting point
-new substances are formed -no new substances are formed
-in nature, they are homogeneous -in nature, they are homogeneous as
-eg. Salt, iron sulfide well as heterogeneous.
-eg. Salt and sand, sugar and water
Differences between Compound of Iron sulfide
and iron and sulfur mixture
Iron sulfide compound iron and sulfur mixture
- The composition is fixed - the composition is variable
- Pure substance - impure substance
- New substance is found - no new substances are found
- Dark grey colour - the mixture looks grey and yellow colour

Alloys
Alloys are metal mixtures.

• Alloys are stronger and harder , less malleable, less ductile and more
corrosion-resistant than the main metal making the alloy.
Types of alloys
Types of alloys compositions
(1) Bronze - Copper and tin

(2) Brass - Copper and zinc

(3) Steel - Iron and carbon

(4) Aluminium alloys - Aluminium, iron , copper and zinc

(5) Nickel alloys - Nickel, copper, iron, molybdenum and

chromium
