THE GREAT CHICAGO FIRE

• The year of 1871 had no rain, so everything was very dry

• The fire started in a building called the O’Leary farm
• People think the fire was caused by a cow kicking a lantern over
• Most buildings in Chicago were made out of wood, with tar roofs which
were very flammable
• 17,500 buildings were destroyed in the fire and 1 in 3 people were
homeless
